Default Updated gearbox for a 1936 coupe

Hi guys,

I'm looking at replacing the original 36 gearbox with a 39 for a smoother changing box. Can anyone think of good or bad points, or a completely different idea. I want to keep it a manual and a floor shift.

A very common and popular swap. The synchro design is more modern and efficient. The rear mount and clutch release parts from the 36 box will need to be fitted to the 39 box to make the swap.

The later innards will fit into the original case if you have a numbers matching original trans ---I put the innards from a perfect 46 trans I had kept from when i had a 46 in mine

If you don't have a 39 shifter housing with the 3" fork, you can put the same 3" second/high fork in your 1936 shifter housing. This fork is necessary to operate the 39-48 synchro gear properly.

You keep all the same '36 rear retainer and mount parts. If you have obtained a complete 39-48 trans for this swap, be sure to use the complete gearset. Naturally, you'd want to replace all bearings, thrust washers, and probably the bronze synchro rings.

While we're on the subject, the late gears will also fit into a Model B trans case. I have a B engine and trains in my 31 A with gears out of a 41-48 trans and a 39 top shifter. I like to let guy that own a stock Model A drive my car, they cain't believe how smooth it shifts. I also had the B flywheel lightened and redrilled for a 9in. V8 clutch, It's a lot smoother pressure plate than a Model A. Walt
