Default '36 Ford pickup windshield glass installation....

HELLO all....

Is it required to separate the two-halves of the windshield frame to install new windshield glass on my '36 Ford pickup

Thank you,

Bruce in California

If you want to put glass in it you will have to separate the two halves. Sometimes it can really be a bitch. Freeing up the screws is really difficult. I have a w/s frame that I have been spraying with Atf/Acetone mix for about 3 years, and it still won't break free. Have also tried heat. (This has been an off and on job.)

Also , a little thinner on the perimeter of the glass will loosen the old bedding materials from the frame . I lay the frame and glass on my 34 truck flat on horses and poured thinner on it and about an hour later the frame loosened right up with a couple of taps with a wooden block /and mallet. The frame screws can be a bit of a challenge though . Patience is key .. not fun ... but they will come out.

Don't know if I'd have the patience Lawson has to wait 3 years. In my case I kept soaking the two joints with pb blaster over a couple weeks while I was disassembling the rest of the truck. Doing the same with the hinges and where the crank attached to the window frame. Small propane torch heat a few weeks later and used my hammer impact screwdriver to knock all those flathead screws out. Originally got the screw driver from Sears years ago to remove Phillips head screws from brake rotors. I'll try to add a link if I can find one cause I'm not sure exactly what the tool is called. But if that had failed I would have just drilled out the screws instead of waiting years

You want to be careful I use this with a quite small sledge hammer, but it does well to keep a good bite on screws that you just can't do with a regular screwdriver

Here's me doing it on my '36 PU, easy enough, wrong! putting the frames back together and Crack! I found out the trick is for a home builder like me, use black ATV Silicone and forget about it!

I have attachment that fits on my air chisel gun. Has a little handle to the side to gently work the rusty screw back and forth while applying vibration. You have to be careful with the air trigger. Attachment accepts different sizes of bits. If its a screw you can get the bit on, I'm confident I will get it out real fast. I always use WD 40 on all rusted screws.
