Default Firestone GUM DIPPED ??

I always wondered what "Gum Dipped" referred to on old Firestone tires.
This was today's antique-market find. I paid $1 for the card.

I have a set of Firestone Gum-Dipped whitewalls on my '28 Tudor. They are from the mid '80s and they have no signs of splitting or cracking. They were made in New Zealand.

I imagine this process helped protect the cotton cords from exposure to the elements so they wouldn't rot as quick.

MikeK, thanks for the posting that very special post card. I like Firestones and have them on my Model A. When my new tires arrived a year ago they had a tag attached proclaiming that they were "Gum Dipped". The tradition continues into the 21st Century.

I have an OOOOLD Lester 6:00 X 16 for a spare. It has raised lettering, "NOT TO BE USED ON CARS MANUFACTURED AFTER 1948"
It is smooth, supple, beautiful beads, about 2/3 tread left! It looks like a 6 months old tire. SEE, them bastards COULD make us some GOOD tires, if they were willing to do it!!!
Just for fun, I'll try mounting it TUBELESS & SEE IF IT WILL HOLD AIR. (Yes, I have a new tube for it, just in case??)

I hope I'm not the only one who visualized an old B western sidekick like Fuzzy St. James saying "Gosh golly! I'll be gum-dipped and hornswaggled!"
