47 ring and pinion set
Anyone know where to find a ring and pinion set for my 47 pickup? I want a 3:54 or higher to replace the 4:11 there now. I have a set for a 41, will they work?

They will work. Swap meets and want ads. 3.54 sets are hard to find.

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
Rather than buy a used set (which won't be cheap) consider a new set. But, before buying talk to someone who has used Speedway. Remember in the old days when it was "Getz Gears"?

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
I just looked at the Speedway link posted by 19fordy, and was surprised to find that their ring/pinion is specified for 35-48 cars, but ends with 41 pickups. Are 42-47 half ton banjos any different than passenger car banjos?

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
That is what I was wondering. I know the 41 is a closed driveshaft and the 47 is open. If they will work, I am set. Don't want a used set.

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
The pick-up pinion ('42-'48) will need to take a U-joint yoke, unlike a torque tube-type slip joint. DD

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
So, are you saying the pinion will not work? If not, I am back to a set from somewhere.

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
Not sure when the tube ended. I just know I have a 41 with a tube and a 47 with an open shaft.

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
42-47 pickups are open drive shafts. Rod

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
As you know, ANY '41 is torque tube. The '47 pick-up is "open" drive, with a "normal-type" automotive driveshaft with U-joints on each end. The PINION shafts are vastly different between the two at the driveshaft-attachment ends. DD

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
Check these two links of MacVP's to see the pinion differences. DD

Re: 47 ring and pinion set
There is a kit (pricey) to convert a close drive rearend to open drive...now if the parts will physically install into your '47 rearend, you may get by with minimal work needed, since you have the majority of the "kit" in your '47 rear...
It might be possible to just use/find the correct Yoke for the splined earlier pinion shaft. Speedway sells the kit...on know on the HAMB many have converted without the kit, machining what was needed for a seal retainer and using "some" easy to find Yoke. Edit: Here's the Speedway kit.. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/search...ive+conversion |
