Default Water Pump Seals

In rebuilding the water pump, any thoughts on keeping with the original lead packing strips or switching to the neoprene seals? Also, since I don't have brazing equipment, but do have end play, thoughts on using a collar to minimize end play? Thanks!

Just one (1) experience with modern seals:

Rebuilt my old, original water pump with new SS shaft and new seals from Bratton's over seven years ago & installed new collar to prevent possible end play -- still no leaks.

There's SO MANY water pump options out there. I prefer the totally sealed, ball bearing type, "JUST SET IT, & FORGET IT" (I'M LAZY!)

Lead will allow you to tighten up the seal when it starts to drip. Neoprene doesn't offer that option.
