4 cylinder motors
I've been a hotrodder for 50 years but have never done a 4 cylinder except for building a deuce roadster back in the early 70's with a Merc marine 4 cylinder. I am exploring doing another deuce roadster with a 32/34 4 cylinder, 39 transmission, quick change rear. I have no idea where to start as to the motor and hooking the 39 box to the 4 cylinder. So far sources for this install are sparse and this looks like it could get expensive? I have the trans and will be building my own chassis but have no idea where to find a motor without getting screwed. Any suggestions?

Re: 4 cylinder motors
My first suggestion is to put your general location in your profile. You should consider using a 4 cylinder transmission and putting the '39 gears in it and the '39 tower on it.

Re: 4 cylinder motors
Below is a "B" transmission case that bolts-up to a '32-'34 4-cylinder engine. Your '39 gears will bolt right in to that box, as will the '39 shift tower. DD

Re: 4 cylinder motors
My location Is Nebraska and I've been the owner of Cornhusker Rod And Custom for 40 years. This is my first venture in to the 4 cylinder world. I had also looked into the T5 trans conversion from Miller High Speed Heads as I am somewhat familiar with T5's.

WE over on the V8 side know who you are. You will be SOOOOO much happier with the T5, especially if you end-up going with one of the close ratio gearsets like the early Camaro and Mustang NWC 2.95 1st gear. Throw an S-10 tail shaft housing on it and GO! As light as that car will be, plus the option of fine-tuning the rear gear with a quickie, it'll be the nuts! Don't let that NWC (Non World Class) BS scare you off. The only differences are bearing design and synchronizer materials. I favor the NWC boxes myself. You need to post this on the V8 site also 'cuz the "B" engines are '32-'34. I'm one of the ones mixed-up with the T5 W/TORQUE TUBE project. Click my link below, left. DD |

Re: 4 cylinder motors
I would think most speed equipment would be interchangeable or at least adaptable between the A and B engines.

Re: 4 cylinder motors
What Charlie said. My Diamond B engine (with blocked off steam holes) has a repop Winfield head, Winfield cam, single d/d inlet, English 97 carb and small English Ford distributor, all of which would work on to an A block

Re: 4 cylinder motors
Juggler, thanks for the recommendation. I just added a chapter on my good friend Dan Iandola, it is at the printer now. All my books are now in color, except for the vintage pics.
