Default 49 Ford Starter

Had a starter trouble and removed starter. The trouble was one of the bolts used to secure the spring to the shaft had come out along with the washer. My problem is the bolt and washer are still in the housing where the starter goes. I replaced starter . However, any ideas on how to get the washer and bolt out. I know I have to take out starter. Any ideas. Also, what damage can happen with the bolt and washer still be in there? Thanks.

Magnet on a string. Radio Shack used to have magnets with a hole in them, worked for me on several occasions.

I have used a magnet taped to a coat hanger wire so I could push into the area I needed to go. Got the job done but pretty hokey!!

I have a magnet on a flexible cable. Like the sheath on a choke cable. Got it at one of those Chinese tool stores...... Mark
