Raising the vin number on a frame.

I read somewhere that there is an acid that you can use to raise the vin numbers that are mostly rusted away.
This car, the motor and transmission has been changed, having a different vin number then the frame. Any help would be appreciated.

Bill, if it has the original transmission it should also be at the top of the bell housing also if you pull the floorboard up.

There are several ways to do it for forensic purposes. A solution containing Hydrochloric acid is used for steel but they add a few other ingredients.

Bill, Something you might try is how I cleaned up the number. I used a Dremel Moto-Tool with a wire wheel. It broughtthe number up very nicely. I then taped it off then painted the frame. After it dried I took the tape off the number and clear coated it so I can always find it.

What year are you talking about? On the 46 I believe the VIN is only on the frame. Not transmission or engine. Maybe someone will come in with the facts.

The vin is on the frame in at least 2places. Additionally it is on the top of the transmission bell housing. If the transmission has been replaced, then the numbers will match. You will probably have to remove the floorboard to read the numbers on the transmissions.

The '46 should actually have a partially punched out oval opening at top center of the removable floorboard. The tab can be bent up to allow you to peer through toward the serial number, and to read it is it's clean enough.

Check crages list one near you .There are so many cars out there are junk from big ideas. Buy another car for number and history. I had a 48 coupe and couldn't,t find number. Did you register it use that number and stamp that # for star I used small v and indexed 5 times. my 47 # is near steering box.

These frames are so old and weathered and do you see all the frame swaps on here.
Front clips. MII front ends you loose the numbers and the trans #s.
But when I stamp a # I put on a white shirt and tie and I work for the state that day.
Your car could be stolen.

If you can trust the cars history and documentation, it wouldn't be considered a felony. It is only illegal to change a number to something else (VIN tampering). KR Wilson sold stamps to the public so that frames and transmission cases could be replaced if needed. Stamps are still available but a person should be aware of the legal risks to tampering with VINs.

What you need is " Nic-a date " used by coin collectors and you should be able to find it on epay for about six bucks . .

I have the same issue with my 40 PU the frame number matches the title but the motor and trans has been changed. I doubt any police officer is going to make me remove the cab to see the numbers so I had a small serial number tag stamped with the frame number and riveted it to the firewall, don't know if this is a felony or not but I believe all vehicles are registered by frame number because motors can be swapped.

I have worked with some really bad frames that looked like there was no way to determine the frame numbers and have always been able to figure them out eventually. It just takes a little effort. I have not done so myself, but it is claimed than even if the frame numbers have been ground down you can still determine the original numbers with various methods.

I'm not sure it will work on a frame but I know that on an engine that the number has been ground off you can bring the image back up by heating it with an oxy torch.
