Default Grease Fittings

What is the proper way to pump grease through Model A grease fittings ? Are there any direct conversion zerk-type fittings ? If so, are they worth converting to ?

You just push the gun on the end of the fitting and pump, but you need to have the proper end on the gun. The parts suppliers should all have them.
You can buy a kit with all the modern zerks in it. Some are driven in and some are threaded, so you would need to get the driver and a list of which are which. Most all the jobs we do are drivers so install modern zerks.

jacking may make the spindles easier to grease. I use a air gun.

The original type were Alemite, todays standard are Lincoln design. This is the gun fitting that Bratton's sells for the original Alemite fittings.

I've never had any problem using a standard grease gun. Just hold it on firmly.
