A plastic model in the back window of a car may not last too long. Way too much heat on that plastic.

rotorwrench: You make a very good point. It looks a bit too "clean cut".

Re: I hope a barner won this auction
3D printer? No, just a modeler with some serious sculpting skills. Resin bodies have been around for a long time and they fill a void. An unusual car or a car that might only have a limited following, maybe a particular race car, or in the case of 1/8 scale there have been bodies that have been cast in resin. Want to build a 1/8 scale ‘32 five window instead of the typical Revell/Monogram high boy roadster? Then it’s going to be resin.
First is an example sculpted in clay, and obviously accuracy is foremost, then producing the mold to reproduce bodies and finally pouring the resin and trimming any excess flash. Limited production stuff of high accuracy is costly and some are willing to pay the price. Any hobby can be expensive, it all depends on how much you are into it. One last thing, resin bodies long predated the 3D printer.

Re: I hope a barner won this auction
A 3D printer would be a lot less work after it is scaled for reproduction. They use resin too. http://generation3d.ae/project/3d-pr...per-car-model/
These are tanks so they are pretty complex. https://www.gambody.com/blog/top-12-...model-designs/ This one is an engine with moving parts. https://www.rapid3d.co.za/working-3d...engine-models/ Last edited by rotorwrench; 03-18-2019 at 12:58 PM. |

Re: I hope a barner won this auction
Whether this model is 3D printed or not depends on if you believe that
ALL AMERICAN MODELS had the technology to print them prior to the year 2000, when they went out of business.

Re: I hope a barner won this auction
Printing a body like this on a 3D printer (especially back in the 90's) would not have been economically viable - the cost of the machines and the runtime per model would result in a price that nobody could afford. That is my opinion . . . and I'm sticking to it! LOL

Re: I hope a barner won this auction
3D printers print in layers. The cheaper the printer the more space between passes. Seen a small startup company that printed parts for their new design printer. If this was printed on a 3D printer, either it was a very very expensive printer or someone sanded it for hours on end to make it smooth, which if they did, they earned the 230. 3D printers are getting very affordable.
I like working on cars but I respect and enjoy these guys. Having fun designing. A lost art. Probably a few guys out there that should have chopped a plastic model car before hacking a real one. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...models.869868/ Last edited by Tinker; 03-19-2019 at 12:24 AM. |
