47 front brakes
I have a stuck front brake drum, I'm pretty sure the brakes need backed off, I have tried the two 11/16 adjustment bolts that have the spring under them, I can get about a turn out of them and then it gets pretty solid feeling. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Re: 47 front brakes
the two 11/16 bolts have a cam on the inside. turning them out, towards the tire, they will stop when the shoes are tight to the drum. turning them in, towards the axle, takes the shoe off the drums to loosen. the cam has a notch at the end of its travel so it will stop at the innermost point. turn them in, then get a little violent with a rubber hammer on the backing plate, perhaps rattle the shoe off the drum

Re: 47 front brakes
Its off, it responded well to the violent beating with a rubber hammer.
Thank you for the help. |

Re: 47 front brakes
Replacing the drums on the hubs is a job for someone that knows what they are doing and has a 20 ton press. Contact a local Model A or early V8 Ford Club and see who the members use. Don't leave them at a shop that thinks they can do it but hasn't done it before. Sorry I don't have any recommendations as the best place to buy drums.

Re: 47 front brakes
the best drums are here, high quality american made good stuff. dont buy the chinese things at macs or speedway. charlie may be right to a point, but if you have some shop skills we can walk you thru it. http://www.bolingbrothers.com/brands...-Products.html

Re: 47 front brakes
Also the original studs are swaged onto drum, they must be cut before removing.

Re: 47 front brakes
The studs are actually rivets that have been deformed to lock the drum to the hub. A press will likely deform somethng. The studs are also pretty soft. I use a 5/8 deep hole saw and run it in to cut the pushed out metal swedge. This does not hurt anything. It goes supprisingly fast.

Re: 47 front brakes
andy is right, dont try to press them out without cutting with a hole saw. you will warp the hub. dont ask how in know this

Re: 47 front brakes
Dropped them off to see if they can be turned down, I have my fingers crossed but they looked pretty ugly.

Why do they say that these drums can only be used with 1940-41 hubs? |

This site was helpful with explaining the difference.

Re: 47 front brakes
I'm aware of the differences, but why does the source referenced above state that they are only for use on the early (40-41) style (with modifications)? They are also out of stock on that site it appears.

Re: 47 front brakes
the new drums from mt products are only for the "drum over the hub" style. no one that i am aware of makes drums for the later 46 48 "drum under"
