My late 31 Victoria has the Rocky Mountain style front hubs. After replacing the bearings and races and spinning the hub to "preload" the bearings, I still have some in-and-out movement on the hub. It is about 1mm of movement. Is that close enough or should there be no movement at all?

If I tighten things down to try to eliminate the movement, then everything binds and the hub barely moves.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

How'd everything go together, almost sounds like either a bearing or race isn't quite square to its mating surface . You can try tightening it up to where the wheel won't turn and then tap the bearing race with a punch and hammer (be careful not to damage anything, brass drift would be the best) to see if that helps "seat" everything, then back it off and try adjusting from there.

You should always check the roundness of the surfaces you can easily do. I have found the bottom of the bearing on the spindle is often worn. Well out of the 12 spindles I have 10 are too worn for me to use them.
Then there is fit of the bearing shell in the hub. They should always need to be pressed in with a bit of pressure. If they just slide in then they are not so good.

You can fix stuff with bearing glue or pricking the area. I first try to locate a better part.
