Default Seat Upholstery Price

I got a quote for the price of re upholstery for the seats only, in a 30 tudor,,,

$1400.00,,, labor only, I furnish fabric.....

That seems insanely high to me,,, Thoughts?

I may soon be the new owner of an industrial sewing machine,
I would come out money ahead,,,

I got a $700 estimate on my '31 pickup if that helps. Yep, it was labor only.

If you have had any home furniture redone, this might not surprise you.

To get seats fitting right takes some time and knowledge.

Have you ever seen how home made cloths sometime look.

Check out the LeBaronBonney site:

https://www.lebaronbonney.com/photo-galleries.htm

They have videos on how to install their kits. Might be cheaper to install a kit yourself instead of making it yourself. There are also some "do it yourself" videos on YouTube.

Last year the estimate to recover two stock bucket seats for my 89 Bronco II was $650.00 PLUS fabric.

Take the time to watch a seasoned upholsterer. 90% of the time it's money well spent. I owned two different upholstery shops through the years. I still get calls from folks wanting it for free. I take great delight in saying no. For what it's worth.....it's cheaper for me to buy a LB kit than do my own cut and sew. For what you would pay for a "GOOD" industrial sewing machine and other tools of the trade you would be able to just buy the LB kit. I have installed their kits and the instructions are horrible but in the long run it's (IMHO) your best route.

After pricing Bedford Cord and mohair for my Town Sedan I came up with $90 @ yard.(Bill Hirsch, Newark , NJ) I estimated 10-12 yards, you do the math! Whew! But there are other, more competitive suppliers out there, but you have to buy in much larger quantities. Bedford Cord is not a rare fabric, it's used on many things, and it's only cotton. There's no reason for it to be priced so high. Google Bedford Cord Now ifn' we wuz to get together and buy a roll or two? Who knows?

The best way to reupholster a car that I have found is the a kit from LeBaron-Bonney. I have used several of their kits with fine results by carefully following the detailed directions. Their materials are first class, and if you have a problem, the answer is as close as your phone. You can obtain a catalog by calling 1-800-221-5408.

One way to look at it is;

How many hours do you think it takes to make the entire interior?
How much would you want to get paid for YOUR labor.
Do you want the equivalent of a “Tijuana upholstery job while you wait”?

The old saying goes, … You can either have it Fast, Cheap or Quality, … you can only choose one!

Regards
Bill

A couple of years ago I had the Bench seat on my 90 F-150 done for $150 (Pleather), ... It needs it done again.

I guess one way of looking at it is, $150.00 every couple of years, .. you'll always have a new seat every other year.

20 years ago, my upholsterer found 2 hidden GREY LEATHER skins & did my truck bench seat for $485.00--Other shops wanted $800.00! Pays to SHOP!

Thank you to everyone that responded to my inquiry,,,

all very thoughtful and well stated, thank you.

Fordbarn excellence at it's best!

I don't want a shoddy job, nor do I want it for free at all,, I often pay more for what someone might ask if I feel they are too cheap on the price, everyone likes a tip.

The last time I got seats done was in the early eighties, the work was always excellent and the price was so much cheaper,, that I was taken back a bit,,,,I've worked around the car restoration business a lot,, but have been out of it for years,, things have changed.

Guess I haven't caught up with the economic times,,

Thanks again everyone!

I second the LeBaron-Bonney recommendations. We purchased upholstered cushions for two cars - all new springs, covers, etc. Just had to install them - as another poster said, L-B instructions are pretty bad but installation was simple enough.

Considering Bill Sturm gets now 70.00 hour or 12-18K per car that sounds reasonable to me!!
