Default Universal shell grease

Today I was successful in put in grease into the universal shell. I used corn head grease. I got a complete tube (14 oz) into the cavity.

No grease has yet to come out of the speedometer connection. In fact the speedometer cable has yet to be installed.

So, have I put enough grease in the shell, or should I add some more?

Thanks,

Most say to keep going until you see it in speedo window. FWIW

Well, I just pushed a second tube, (total 28 oz) into the shell. Still no visible sign of grease from the speedometer opening.

I guess that I will need to try a third tube. I will have to get that tomorrow.

Thank you,

I just installed a transmission and a new u-joint. I hand packed the clam shell and one tube of cornhead-grease filled it. I put heavier grease on the outside/torque-tube. You want to be careful that you aren't pumping it in to the transmission.

I used my original tool kit grease gun and filled it with Mystik JT-6 High Temp red grease. I had to repack the gun 10 times before the grease started to come out the speedometer hole. I had the shift tower off, and at the same time grease started to come out the speedometer hole, it also just started to work past the rear tranny bearing oil shield. I have the original open bearings in my tranny.

See post 4 & 5. Mine came out the clamshell felt seals after about 1 tube. It appears to soften with heat and working pressure so there may be some residual drip similar to the steering gear.
