Drakes 40 coupe old vs new?

I hope these take off and do well.

The strangest part about this for me is.
Probably 15 years ago (more or less ) my dad and I were at the Pleasanton show talking to Bob Drake at his booth lookin at the new 40 grill and sides…… My dad told him how great it would be if he made brand new 40 coupes.

I saw it at the NSRA street rod nationals in Louisville last year. I can see a need for all the individual parts that make up a 40' body,but selling a complete body is a little out of reach. There are plenty original 40's out there! and with the the age demographic of our hobby,more and more are being freed up everyday. Drake would have been better off making a 40' convert,fewer out there and probably easier to make!

I have used his floorboard subrails and cowl sides. Everything fit perfectly. Not an issue and I have a feeling the rest of the car is that way. Without a doubt I'd buy one knowing that....here in PA 40 coupes are like hens teeth and it's like that all over the north east because we use salt on the roads....so when you do find on the whole lower 8" is missing and you still gotta pay good money for it...last one I say for sale would just be a parts car for you west coast guys but for us it's buildable and it was nearly $10,000...that's the only one that's been for sale here in 5 years...my 40 sedan delivery is the same way...it was rough no nothing left I picked the floorboards up and took them out with no cutting and had to put cowl sides subrails make new wood and I still paid $5500 for it and I consider that a deal

Local friend here in town has a beautifully restored maroon 40 deluxe coupe and a Jefferson blue 39 Deluxe coupe that he has been trying to sell $30,000-$35,000 range last couple years. Last summer or sometime last year or two seems every couple days was a black 40 deluxe coupe or coupes coming out to be sold by longtime owners,on Ebay,V8 club classified etc,these all seem to be above $25,000 and were good original cars needing restoration. I myself think enough originals are around to satisfy the shrinking need.

Wow, I'm not sure I get this one... (no offense intended at all to 37 Coupe) A beautifully restored maroon 40 coupe for 30-40k then a lot of 40 coupes all above 25k that need restoration. There is no way in the world anyone (at least anyone I know) could restore a car for the 5-10k difference. I definitely would be looking at the restored car and not one that needs restoration.

I guess I was trying to make that point,he still has coupes as far as the other ones I mentioned I do not know if they sold or not. Point I was really trying to make was comparing buying a new China made 40 body,frame,fenders and everything else,no way under $35,000,but most people going this route money would not be a factor.

Yeah, I think Drake's bodies are for the guy that has the pro-built $100,000 street rod in mind.

I've had over a dosen '39 and '40 coupes and one convertible,
and I am interested in any that are "good buys" out there,
so show me some links that are current.

Probably a stupid question, but did they have assembly manuals for the 40 coupe? Mine came from an old junkyard, stripped, and really incomplete. I'm not sure what I need, or how it goes back together for that matter......

To date I have seen no sheetmetal parts made in China fit and I dont know about Drakes parts but other importers of the Ford sheetmetal suck big time. I tried to fit a 66 mustang fender and finally threw it in the dumpster. I didnt get to finish the car then but I felt better whe the garbage truck hauled out the trash.

Drakes aren't like the other crap out there so please get that out of your head....as I said in an earlier post drakes new sheetmetal is perfect in every way every hole lines up and every bend fold everything is absolutely how it would have left the factory in 40
