unscrew the cap off and its a grease fitting under not to much or you end up with grease plugging radiator core

Thanks! I never wiped off fitting after taking off cap I thought it was more complicated than it is!

Works better with engine idling. Greasing is recommended at the end of a run. Some will even loosen the seal to get grease on the shaft. One pump is all you should need. Excess goes into the cooling system.

The only brass rear grease fittings I have seen use the old Alemite grease gun nozzles, which won't work with our modern guns. You need to either order a grease gun adapter for Alemite fittings (a couple bucks) or temporarily remove that brass fitting and install a modern nipple fitting. Pump grease into that fitting until the grease just starts to come out of the LOOSENED and BACKED OFF water packing nut. Then tighten the packing nut. Remove the modern fitting and replace it with the clean, unused Alemite fitting.
By the way, the original Alemite style fittings can be identified by their pointed/conical nipples, as opposed to the "modern" fitting with its naughty bulbous nipple (ala "The Church Lady").

Question, would it suffice, to just occasionally fill the cap with grease, & screw it fully on, while the engine is running?
Not a problem for me, as I run a greaseless pump. My rebuilt stock pump & 2 blade fan, rest on the wall.

To Bill's question.....I just installed a leakless "greaseless" pump. The instructions that came with it were clear that greasing the REAR fitting is still needed; not needed for the front fitting.

I think I get it now, I did buy the adapter to grease the fittings I tryed to use the cap like a model T cup didint work! I never wiped it clean and it was dark so I thought maybe there was a special fitting. It seems the old style fittings dont have check balls so the cap keeps the water from leaking? the pump packing was driping it has stoped now but I think the water pump will need work soon and the packing nut looks like alum. and is corroded it should be brass from what I have read. car is running pretty well just short drives so far. thanks guys

The 28-9 packing nut was brass, but I'd have to check in the Judging Standards to see exactly when the nut changed to die cast.

I do one pump of blue, waterproof grease in the front and rear fittings the evening before a long tour.

Dave,
There's ALL kinds of variations of "leakless" pumps. Mine has dummy fittings, with NO holes. I took my rear dummy off & found a dead end at the sealed rear bearing. Mine came from Sacramento Vintage Ford.

Bill - I thought that the water pump I installed was fully greaseless....was a tad surprised when I read that information AFTER the pump was installed.

Prior to pumping grease on the rear fitting, back off packing nut so grease is not pumped into the water system, you can better control the amount of grease. Has worked fine for me!

Yo' Brother Ron,
On a stock pump, I've read this procedure: " Loosen the packing nut slightly, remove the rear fitting, keep putting grease on the tip of your finger & pushing it in the water pump hole & re-install the fitting"----And as Tom W. says, back off the packing nut & rub some grease around the packing. Apparently, this helps to NOT over-grease it. Do you all think this is sufficient?
I'm sure many of you have seen where someone got HAPPY with a grease gun & had the WHOLE cooling system "FLOATING" with GREASE

always use the correct grease
its called water pump grease
i used to use a clear(amber) water pump grease and it was more like wax
otherwise ordinary chassis grease will coat the inside of your radiator and block and impede the heat transfer

I would not use water pump grease in that rear fitting it has a high melting point and if you pump too much in on a regular basis you will probably block a radiator tube or two.Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

A few years ago, there were water pumps available with ceramic seals. I'm thinking of doing one of those for myself. Does anybody know what seal they used?
Wait a moment, Why don't I do one for each of my cars? Might even be able to sell the odd one!

Thanks guys! I got it greased! I couldn't do it with my new adapter but with the old gun that was under seat it was easy! It's hard to hold new gun and pump it at same time
