Starter switch issue
I am a new member here and I am trying to get my father's 1930 A running. The car has been sitting for a few years. The first issue I am having is with the starter switch. The starter switch was replaced a few years ago. When I try to step on the starter, the rod doesn't seem to move. I removed the switch and made sure the rod wasn't getting caught on the floor gromment. If I take a screw driver and touch the battery cable to the starter contact directly the starter turns the engine. I have cleaned the contacts on the starter and reinstalled the switch. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Mike |

Re: Starter switch issue
With the starter sw in your hand and you depress the rod does the switch contact "move"?? Is the rod binding in the grommet??
Also ck the alignment of the contact within the sw housing so it's not binding there. Paul in CT |

Mike-
If you add a location to your profile or to your post, you would be surprised how helpful people that live near you will be.

Re: Starter switch issue
I was able to resolve the issue. The problem turned out to be the starter switch. It apparently bent and was in constant contact with the starter. I bent the copper strap slightly. Everything is working properly now. I plan on purchasing a new one this week.
Jim thanks for the tip. I will add my location to my profile. Oh one more question is there suppose to be an insulator between the starter housing and the starter switch? i don't mean the insulator in the starter switch. Thanks Mike |

Re: Starter switch issue
Some 1928 starters with the box shaped switch used and insulator, but all the later switches had none.
Be sure to use the correct screws to mount the switch, as too long a screw can short out the fields. |
