Default '40 Side Shifter Cover Removal...

Is it possible to remove the side shifter plate from the side shift gearbox without removing the gearbox from the car?

The seals have gone in the one in the car and I've built up a replacement and want to swap them straight over.

Thanks.

Yes, just did that very thing on my 40 a couple months back . It does make it a whole lot easier if the floor pan or transmission cover, which ever you call it, is removed, but I have done this both ways.

The shift cover can be removed from under the car without removing the floorboard cover. Not a big deal.

Clark, I did this in my 40. Hopefully your 36 should be similar.

Mart.

I did this in my '40 from under the car. It wasn't easy because several of the bolts are hard to get a wrench on, but it can be done. I had to do it twice because the first time the yoke missed the gear and would not shift. Good luck.

Just be sure that you get the two shift forks correctly back into their grooves in their respective gears. The rear fork (for 1st & reverse slider gear) is offset from its shaft. The fork offset goes to the rear of the trans. Keep everything in neutral when installing. If you get the offset wrong, the levers will shift but the slider gear will not be positioned correctly for 1st or reverse action.
