41 seering play toward L and R lock
Stock 41 front end, with the wheels straight ahead, steering seems very nice, no free play in the steering box all is good. But when I turn the wheels L or R, at about 3/4 of the way to lock, I start to get what seems like an excessive amount of free play. (by free play, I mean with the car jacked up, grab the tire and actuate the steering, the pitman arms turns in the box without the steering wheel moving) . . . I know "a lot" is a relative term, I am not sure how to quantify how much to know if it is too much. I understand these boxes have inherently have more free play toward the extremes. I guess my questions are: How can I tell if I have too much play, is it unusual for them to wear out at the end of travel and still feel fine in the center, and what are my options to make it as good as it is going to get . . . can you adjust the ends of travel without making the center too tight?
If anyone knows of any good threads or videos, don't be afraid to post links I would love to read up . . . Thanks. |

Jeep,
Your steering box is fine. The weight of turn will keep the worm and sector tight. It's working as deigned. Charlie ny |

The only place that steering free play matters is at dead straight ahead, where there is no load pushing back through the drag link to the Pittman arm. |
