Speedster Project
Well, I got a bit more done this last weekend. Not as much as I had hoped, but still plenty.
Saturday morning I went down and helped cut the nuts off a frog. That's railroad speak I guess for part of the rail switching mechanism. I volunteer down at the Abilene and Smokey Valley Railroad, and we were laying another track and switch to the barn. Back home I started to put the chassis together. Sunday morning I rolled it into the shop to clean up the frame rails some: Then my little helper and I set the motor in: I still need to move the front crossmember ahead a scosh and get a set of rear u-bolts. That's all for now. |

Re: Speedster Project
Looks good, your making some fast progress...brakes and everything.
Good feeling to have helper, definite bonding moment. I think it would be hard to know where to spend my time, car or the train. Maybe a train race? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIB6b...eature=channel Keep up the good work. Last edited by KCTA Chris; 11-01-2010 at 11:02 AM. Reason: link |

Re: Speedster Project
Nice locomotive. My Dad's currently restoring a 1928 Pullman car. Back in the 1930's both of my Grandfathers worked in a N & W owned coal mine. They were good friends and they worked in different sections back in the handloading days. They had to lay their own track to their section. They could only get 6 inch frog bolts to bolt the track together which was hard to do being so short. Eight inch frog bolts were a luxury. My paternal GF sent my maternal GF a bag of 8" bolts that he had hidden in the mine, thoroughly upsetting his own brother in law and cementing a friendship that lasted a lifetime.

Re: Speedster Project
Feel the love, 90 people are interested and I am sure would like you to keep posting and show photos of your progress.. The quality time between you and your helper is something to cherish as it can not be bought at any price, from your avatar her face says it all! From your sketch the rear looks like a pickup box? I like the concept of an "open cab" pickup...do you plan any engine mods or just a light weight speedster... Make sure your seat can adjust so a certain helper's legs can reach the pedals!!! Kool start, keep updates coming most people will not respond unless they have something to say , that has never stopped me or a politician! My dad always said " the way to tell if a canidate is lying, is to see if his lips are moving" LOL

Right now, just keep it running. But eventually I'd like a higher compression head, cam. Just mild stuff. Yep. That's the plan also, make the seat very adjustable so the girls can bop around the yard with it. |

brakes are a good thing . The seat looks comfortable. Does it have a muffler or straight pipe? headers?

Re: Speedster Project
This past weekend I made a go at building a speedster seat. I wanted a bench style so I could squeeze a third person in front if needed. All week I pored over pics of vintage style speedster seats. I did some measuring and drew up a plan in cadd, and then plotted it 1:1 scale.
I had a sheet of 1/2" plywood left over from some other project. Next, for the back, I had this old bent up round bale feeder in my scrap pile. The sheet bottom was 16" and heavy enough gauge to work. Here it is attached to the seat bottom: Next I drew out the curves to trim it and cut one side. Then I used the scrap piece to transfer to the other side so they would be somewhat similar. Then I found a few pieces of nice thick welding rod to use as a edge. I clamped it and tacked that on. Here it is: "Dad!! can I try!!" "I wanna drive!!" Well- that was Saturday. Yesterday I started on the wooden pickup bed. Side: I need to buy some bolts today. It was nice and warm on Saturday: Here is the bed set on the frame for the first time: Motored over to in front of the barn for a photo shoot: Profile shot: I still have a bunch to do yet. Finish bolting it down. Build a tailgate. Also I need to lower the radiator some also. |

Very nice job on the box!
And any guy that has a barn is a lucky guy! Where I live most of the barns have been torn down and replaced by TOO MANY houses; and more houses means more restrictions and fewer freedoms! |

Re: Speedster Project
Great progress!! You and the crew are doing great on our [notice how I have addopted your project] speedster, but I feel "we" should fill the space under the seat back with two drawers... Storage for tools etc I figure you could put a 9x6x20 drawer on each side to pull out and use a simple loch or sliding bolt to hold them closed... just a suggestion from on ford barner to another.... the wing on the box is a great feature!!! keep on trucking

Re: Speedster Project
Thanks guys.
Yes I love my barn. I just finished painting it awhile ago. And we used the speedster/pickup to ferry the ladders and tools etc to put up the wreath and Christmas lights. As far as the space under the seat; I plan on closing in the curved sides and making a couple hinged lids for access under the seat bottom. Then I can attach the seat from inside and hide those ugly brackets also. |

Re: Speedster Project
I got the tailgate made this past weekend.
Here are the parts cut to size and fitted before bolting: Here it is set in place with the strap hinges I found on an old busted gate in the woods: Next I had to make the lower hinges. I like to use the envelopes that TRJ comes in for making templates: Templates: Parts cut: I guess I didn't take a pic of the hinge assembly installed. I'll do that tonight. Re: Speedster Project
Sorry no update yesterday for those of you keeping up. Last weekend I spent alot of time with my girls and not as much working on the speedster. I did cut the headlight bar off the fenders since it was patched and welded all together. I cut them down and heated, bent and mounted them. I installed some 6v sealed beam bulbs I got at Poorman's Auto Supply (GE 6006). I also installed the new ignition switch and did some rewiring. I didn't take any pics yet.

Re: Speedster Project
RFD-TV Had a nice program Monday night on the restoration of the ATSF locomotive your railroad operates. It was an hour long, detailed look at the reconstruction of the flues, crown sheets, etc. The program is "Trains and Locomotives" at 6:00 EST every Monday night on RFD-TV. You fellow steam freaks need to check it out!
