Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
Thanks everyone, I put the bed on tonight, mounted the grill and the hood. I also mounted the lights back on and put a stone guard on the radiator. I plan on pulling the wheels this weekend and painting them as well as fitting the wood bed back in place.

Some more pics, worked on the wheels. I'm in the process of nickel plating the headlight rings. Its working but taking forever. I'll post pictures when I get a little further along.
I added chrome lug nuts and polished up the stainless hub covers. |

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
Do you have a Caswell home plating kit, or how did you try the plating?
I bought the Caswell home plating kit, but haven't set it up to try it yet. |

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
I tried to do it myself without buying the Casewell kit. I used vinegar, 99.9% nickel welding rod with the flux removed, salt, and a 6 volt battery charger. It started to work pretty well, but I think i was using to much current or had to much salt in the solution. With more trial and error I think i could get it to work well. I found the "recipe" online. I'm sure the Casewell kit works well.

Nicw paint job. What brand and type of paint did you use. What do you use in terms of a safety mask or do youmhave a fresh air respirator?

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
The lifts nice, it makes life a lot easier. I've found it makes my buddy's lives easier as well! Its a challenger 10,000 versymetric lift.
I used a base/clear, the brand is Nason and the color is Chrysler Black (PX8). It is one of the deepest black's I've seen. Nason is a cheaper paint but it lays down well and is pretty user friendly. I also used a Nason high build primer under the paint. It helped hide a lot of the 86 year old patina, but no to much! I use a cheap zip up suit-$10.00 or so and a head sock, latex gloves and a disposable respirator. The respirator is good for a couple of paint jobs as long as you store it in the zip lock bag it comes in. I have a large compressor and I use a DeVilbiss Finishline FLG4 HVLP gun with a bunch of different filters. My "booth" is a 2x4 frame, with some clear home depot plastic. I framed in two large furnace filters and use two fans as my exhaust. It pulls air from inside the building(negative pressure in the booth) through the filters. I also added a couple more lights inside for better visibility. Thanks for the compliments. |

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
I started putting the bed on tonight, grandpa came out to help. He built the bed out of rough sawed oak from a friends woods, and used the handrails out of a convent. It has been built for over 25 years, never installed, and still looks like he just made it. Here are a few pictures.

It looks good.
Don't look now, but there's a giant eagle's nest on the shelf behind the truck. |

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
Well I took it to town to fill it up with gas, ran great, came back home an picked up Michelle to run some errands and all went well the frist 20 or so miles, then it starting backfiring out of the carb and would not make it back up the hill. Had to put it on the trailer to get it home.
I have a vented gas cap but would it being to tight cause it to vapor lock? I'm going to change the condensor. It would idle perfect but would not run at speed, like it was starving for fuel. Any thoughts? I think it turned out pretty good though. Still a few more odds and ends to take care of. |

Re: 1928 Ford Phaeton/Huckster
The first thing I always check when she starts running rough is points. Make sure they are gapped right, and double-check your timing. Both are easy, and quick to adjust.
The project looks great, and the family connection makes it all the better. I got my Model A as a project for me and my father. We have spent more time together in the four years since I got than we had in the previous ten years. The car is great...the time together is better.
