I'm going to run a single downdraft setup with a Stromberg 81 and Red's header and stock head. Do I need to use a fuel pump for one carb? If so I have a 12V pump and regulator that I was going to use on a dual carb setup for my other A. This car is still 6V and I read that a 12V pump will still work and probably give the correct PSI.. thanks in advance.

If the manifold is designed so the carb sits low, and the tank is full it'll probably work under most conditions, try it and see. It works better on the 30-31 as the tank is higher in relation to the carb.

A friend is running one on a 29, no issues that he has talked about in over 2000 miles without a fuel pump. I drove the car yesterday in traffic, went right along.

I ran into trouble with a crankcase full of gas with the same set up. Think about using an electric fuel shut off.

An 81 is too small for even a stock Model A engine. A 97 works well and a 48 even better.

What Flatout says is true in that a 97 would be better but the 81 is a big improvement over the stock carb. I replaced the stock setup with an 81 during a hill climb several years ago and my times improved by a full second. This with a stock B engine with the only other change a Winfield 6:1 head.

You should get a 97 and send me the 81

. In reality all strombergs are going to perform about the same. The inportant thing is to get it jetted correctly so that it's not running to lean and you burn up a cylinder or to rich and you get to much carbon build up in your valves. I use a fuel pump, because back when I used a weber I could tell a difference in performance when the gas got below a half tank. So when I went to the stromberg I just kept the fuel pump on it. And it works great. But it would probably be fine on gravity feed. Just shut the gas off everytime you park it for longer than a lunch break.

I'll stick with the 81's even if I have to go with a dual downdraft. Only Stromberg's I have are 81's

These two I re-plated, painted bases with fuel proof epoxy and rebuilt with all new parts, the other dozen are in line next

I am planning to run my LZ 97 on the delivery. If I stumble onto another LZ 97 in my price range I amy consider 2 othem even though I think that is overkill even with oversized valves and the Stipe IB330 cam. I will run an electric fuel pump either way. Rod

Yes, the car was better than expected. Picked it up over the weekend and have been driving it all week. Only replaced radiator hose and cleaned carb. He said when he took pan off it looked like engine was rebuilt. I believe so, runs really strong, no smoke no overheating. Body is really solid on it too. Probably just keep as is.
