blue tooth sounds easy enough, i too am dumb and have a dumb phone to boot. another option i like is the real radio for your car, sent out to one of several places that can do many things to it. some gut it out completely, leaving the face original, and put in modern am/fm, stereo, or a dock for a flash drive to play your favorite stuff. sadly, its not cheap

I don't know how easy it would be to find now, the 60s Blaupunkt am- fm radios mostly could be switched between 6v and 12v, and pos-neg ground, and some have a tape player input that they now use for modern phone- music players, another option is a modern car radio with a remote, hide the radio, power it with 12v jumper box

Are you only interested in 12v installed radio solutions? Only powered by dedicated 12v battery? Or are you open to other approaches? Would you consider a 6v radio?

This is similar to what Henry was attempting to do to run his breathing equipment. Might review his post on the subject. Think the best approach is two 6v batteries that can be charged by the original generator in the vehicle and then connected to the radio as 12volts.

I bought a "modern radio" and the crazy thing has to just about be re-programmed when the switch is turned off and turned back on?I guess it must have power on it all the time so it want lose its mind!Do they make a good simple solid state radio without all the bells and whistles?

It should have one wire to keep the memory alive in it with the key off. Read your wiring diagram for it. Leave it hooked to a fused always hot wire. Usually its yellow I believe.

I wouldn't worry so much about the short (put a fuse in the line) but yes it will drain the battery over time. These radios are designed for cars that are driven daily (or at least frequently).

Does your radio work?
If so there is a thread here about using an Ipod requiring an easy Mod to add the Ipod unit.
I think it'll work fine on 6 volts, if your existing radio still works?

Car is radio delete. Yesterday I bought a MP3 - well that was a train wreck - wouldn't charge and laptop wouldn't recognize it - so took it back to the store and bought a portable CD/FM player - maybe I can have some rock n roll now.

I am using a converter 6 volt to 12 volt.How can I make this work?

If you understand that the radio will be pulling some power all the time, it's a small amount, but it is consuming power. Also keep in mind that the 6v to 12v converters can not provide that much power to a radio so you are going to have to keep the speaker power down.

That is one reason I was wanting to find a radio that did not have all the unnecessary garbage on it.I don't think there is really anything out there that is simple AM/FM.I guess I could use a radio say out of 1970's vehicles?
