I’m putting a new Winfield head on my A. I was sold a best 509G graph tite gasket. My question is should you use copper coat on a graphite gasket or should it be dry?

Three schools of thought, 1st dry, 2nd Copper Coat third Silver Paint. With
The Copper Coat and Silver Paint it should still be wet when you put it on.
They all work.

I run a copper head gasket with my original Winfield red head..in my opinion graphite is dicey... install it dry,no coating

I've had great success with Graphite gaskets. Whether I use one of those or a copper one, I use copper sealant on them all. The only time I didn't use it was on one of those stupid silicone gaskets when the instructions said not to. That was the shortest lived gasket I have ever used. Terrible!

same deal as jack used an old copper gasket got at swap meet anneled it no problems got a total of 8.2 comp with red head an other things done u can also re use as long as u anneale it

Maybe it's just me but when I put on a graphite head gasket I first wipe it down to get the extra graphite powder/residue off of it.
I apply two or three very light coats of copper coat spray allowing it to get good and tacky between coats. Install it while still tacky but not wet.

I'm always careful when spraying the copper coat to spray from the inside of the gasket to keep the exposed edge of the gasket clean. I like the look of it better that way.
If you get too much copper coat on the gasket (it doesn't take much) it will squish out forming small blobs along the edge of the gasket. Resist the urge to wipe it off right away as it will smear like crazy. Run it through a few heat cycles and then carefully pick/scrape the excess off when cold.
