Default New guy with a project Model AA

Greetings,

Been lurking for a while as a guest and joined now that I have a project to start. 1931 Model AA, plan is to start a full restoration in the coming weeks and hopefully do everything myself (or at least attempt). Vehicle appears mostly complete, motor doesn't run but turns over without issue. Excited to get this AA back on the road.

Great project . Photo shows steering tube in need of repair. See Restorer issue Jan/Feb 2021 for an excellent guide to repair. Worked beautifully for me.

Thanks for the repair info, that is the exact reason I'm here . I've already learned a bunch and will likely be overwhelmed in no time.

Usafexplorer,
Great looking truck. What is the tube coming off the oil fill tube going towards the back of the engine?
The body looks real good and the truck looks complete.
Have fun with your new project too!
Regards,
Chris

Is that an indented firewall? Does it also have a steel top? It looks like it's in pretty good shape.

Yes, indented firewall. The top looks like it has been replaced, some kind of cloth/fiberglass type material. Overall in good shape, last on the road in '78 so its been sitting around while. Fortunately its been stored inside the last 40 years or so.

It is a flexible road draft tube , keeps the engine compartment cleaner. I run mine behind the starter, make it a bit neater.

Great looking truck you got there. Don’t forget to get the Les Andrews books and join up with a club.

Thanks, looking forward to getting started. I'll check out the books, never enough info to be had.

Kinda wish this one was metal, the fiberglass (or whatever it is) doesn't seem very robust. I guess if it keeps the water and elements out its working as intended.

Was finally able to look at the pics on a computer screen vs. my phone. I do hope you are going to rewire the truck. If not you may have a wieny roast on your hands.

Curious what you did in the AF?

Actually have a complete harness on the way from Tyree Harris, had a great conversation with him just the other day.

Worked on F-16's as a crew chief for about 14 years, forced into a retrain once we lost our aircraft.

I know you will be very tempted to start the engine ,most folk do . You must remove the oilpan and pop out the dipper tray and clean out all the sludge and clean the pump gauze filter screen . Remove the timing chest cover and clean out the valve chest the main bearings are fed from 3 holes in the floor of the chest one each end and one in the middle .If the holes are blocked the crank bearings will fail .
