A little progress on the 36 Banjo wheel

Right on... it's a '37, not a '36, however, I do have a '36 with a severely cracked ring if felix37 would want to do a '36 next .

Hi Barners,

First... I'd like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Blessed New Year.

Someone please educate me on the differences in Banjo steering wheels. I need a wheel for a 36 Club Cabriolet (Deluxe, I would assume).

The 36 wheel is flat (spokes are flat) and the spokes are separated by a round "slug" of stainless. The spokes are evenly spaced by the "slug". The 37 wheel has a slight curve to the spokes which are evenly spaced and they are separated by an oval diecast spacer( see Felix's photo). The 38-39 banjo has a more pronounced curve to the spokes and the spokes fan out as they move towards the center hub. Spokes are separated with an oval diecast separator similar to the 37 but there is a slight curve to the separator. The 38-39 is reproduced and you can find photos of that wheel on e-Bay. The 36 wheel was reproduced by Drake at one time , but it is no longer made. You can tell the Drake wheel from and original as it has the Drake name inside the bottom of the hub

I have pictures of all the different banjo wheels ('36 thru '38), including the once produced repro '36 Drake wheel. I will try to dig those out later and post here.

I found the '36 Drake wheel to be lighter in weight and flimsier than the originals.

WELL if John is going to do a wheel, I would like to send one of my 39 deluxe, for a do. I know you don't need wood, please make an exception
for me I Have some black walnut from a tree I use to clime as child, it was cut milled and kiln dried 12x12x2 inch with some croch grain, something to see, use some on JM's and anyone else from the barn would be my pleasure to use some of my wood, also some yellow oak with very bright checks .. watch for my pm... thanks.....OLD....BILL

Hi Bill, that walnut would make a nice looking steering wheel. Thank you for the offer to let me to use some. As it turns out my '36 banjo wheels are all in good condition. It's a '37 banjo wheel that I have that's severely cracked around the grip ring. Maybe I will have that done to use on my '35 hotrod project.

Hello. I know this is an old thread but I have a question about the banjo wheel I have and the horn button that I just purchased for it. This is the wheel I bought and I believe it to be a 1937 wheel. The button that I purchased is supposed to be a 1937 as well. My question is, does the 1937 horn button recess slightly into the hub of the steering wheel or does it just sit on top of it? Thanks for the help. Jim
