Default 40 Ford gas gauge problem

Hey fellows working on a 40 Ford someone has installed a new gas sending unit,sometimes it will work and sometimes it pegs the needle like it’s grounded,thought it was wire going to sender,but ran a new wire and it’s doing the same thing,voltage going into gauge is 6v and going to sender is 4.5 v,any you fellas had any problems like this?thanks

Those replacement gauges can be all kinds of trouble.

Im sure they can be ,but its doing it with the sending unit unhooked.

You can test the gauge side using small batteries of different voltages to see what it reads. A D cell battery (1.5 v) should get the gauge to read around 1/2 mark. Here are some past post if your interested.

its strange that even without it hooked up it pegs the gauge sometimes and sometime it don't thats why I ran a new wire,thought it was broke and grounded out,when I was trouble shooting it I grounded wire and gauge did nothing,ran the new wire it worked then drove less than a mile and it peged gauge.

Might be something on the gauge itself that is grounding out. Believe that is just cardboard on the back that provides the insulation.

Jseery , didn't see anything wrong on the back side ,but hooked wire back on and it's working fine now ,mabe I moved something that was causing the problem,
