Default Fuel Pump

I’m going to replace the fuel on my 40, which style is recommended. With glass sediment bowl or without. The glass bowl worries me because of possible leak over a hot manifold.

If you want the correct 1940 fuel pump it's the style on the left. The glass bowl type is '42-'53. Having said that there are even more little differences that truly make it a '40 pump. Most folks don't care about every small detail though.

I would recommend that you find an original pump and have it rebuilt with an ethanol resistant diaphragm. I do not recommend a reproduction pump. Charlie Schwendler OR Michael Driskell here on the Ford Barn can rebuild a pump for you with quality parts.

Thanks , I do some searching the inter web and see if I can find a 40 pump to have rebuilt. The one on my car has the glass bowl. What are the issues with reproduction fuel pumps.

The issues with the reproductions, for me, are the spring tension and the rubber diaphragms are not ethanol resistant. The ethanol resistance is a very important thing. If you contact any of the two folks I mentioned, they will gladly provide you with what you need, at reasonable cost. PM me if you want contact information.

Anytime you can obtain original Ford parts that are in good condition or that can be rebuilt, you are better off and it's money well spent. Experience is the best educator.

P.S I see you are located not far from Auburn Indiana. Are you planning on attending the Early Ford V8 Club meet there this August? I think you will enjoy it and it's a short distance for you.

I don't know specific issues but, I bet they are not made in the USA.
For me, that's a problem. Make sure you also have the correct fuel pump push rod.

Fuel pump rod is correct, rod , fuel pump etc is all still assembled. I’m going thru everything the car hasn’t been started in 20 years. I’m going to send Charlie my carb, I’d like to find the correct fuel pump without the glass bowl if possible and have it rebuilt at the same time. The fuel pump on my engine has the glass bowl, if I can’t find the correct then I’ll probably rebuild what I have. Search is on 👍

While you are sending Charlie your carburetor, ask him if he has a fuel pump for you.

Dave,
I've got a good number of cores and pumps ready to ship....ck your PM's.
I make my own diaphragms and test each pump.....2 1/2 to 3 psi.....ethanol proof.

I like them too. Cork gasket, no issues.

I too, have had better luck with cork gaskets, rather than neoprene. I have no idea why.

Also, I make sure that the mating surface of the glass bowl is flat and smooth by sanding it with wet or dry paper on my surface plate ( a 2" thick slab of granite that is absolutely flat).
