[QUOTE=ford35lh;1845189]What vehicles was the T9 used in ???[/QUOTE

It was the standard 4 speed in most Ford pickups/trucks (up to F6) from 1929-52 The model AA was the first to get them. T98s were used in some 1.5 ton trucks from 48-52. IHC used them up to the mid 50s; they co-existed with T98s in the 50s. Reo Speedwagons used them as well.
The wiki link above is for a horse of a different color.

I believe the original question was referencing a T9....not a T98! DD

There were T8 and T9 gearboxes that were basically the same except one has a PTO and the other doesn't if I remember correctly. Most of the early trucks used them. They a gear grinder boxes with no synchros. They were used clear up into the early 50s in both forms.

Not sure we are all on the same link here. Isn't the T9 a smaller 5 speed similar to a T5? Guess ford35lh will have to clarify what he is referring to.

This is the Wiki page I referred to:

Type 9 (also, Type N, T9, or T-9) is a gearbox from Ford that was used in Ford Capri 1.6, 2.0 1984 onwards, Capri 2.8 1983 onwards, Ford Sierra 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, Sierra XR4i,Sierra XR4x4 2.8 and the Scorpio 4x4 as well as the US market Merkur XR4Ti and Merkur Scorpio.

The Type 9 was Ford's first five-speed, rear-wheel-drive gearbox, and it is based on the four-speed Type E gearbox. The fifth, or overdrive gear, was added to the four-speed gearbox by placing it in the extension housing or tailshaft housing. This made production easier and cheaper but effectively limited torque capacity to 200 lb. ft. or so.

The Type 9 is a popular choice for five-speed conversions of older cars and also for kit car builders, since it comes with a separate bell housing so it can be easily swapped around. Engines that were originally in FWD layouts are fitted to these transmissions so that they can go into a RWD layout, as in a hot rod engine swap or kit car. The gearbox has a 1-inch-diameter (25 mm) 23-spline input shaft, and the main gear housing is cast iron with a cast aluminum tailshaft housing.

Overall, the T-9 is an excellent transmission for vehicles with lower power levels and lighter weight. However, in applications that require more power, the T-9 is frequently replaced with the stronger Borg-Warner T-5 transmission.

The title of the post clearly states "BORG WARNER T9"

Wiki makes no mention of a Borg Warner T9.

Mac VanPelt's site has info on the old original T8 & T9 transmissions. The Type 9 is a different subject altogether.

Guess we are talking about a 4 speed crunch box. All I add Is I had a 1961 Divco model
300 like a ton 1/4 6 cyl flathead Hercule's with this trans. Ya all think shifting these are
tough, try shifting the Divco; shift on the column known as 4 on the tree. LOL sam

Van Pelt ID'd the trans in my 35' ton and a half as a T8/T9.
It has a cast on bell housing.

I think the later ones with the cast on bell are Canadian Ford but I don't know about the early ones.

Not an expert. But they did have synco 2-4 gears on later stump pullers.

1st is a stump puller. At idle it just rolls it, with gas... 5mph.

A t8 is spur cut for sure. All with cast bells, just like a 39 or earlier.

Maybe vanpelt will add to straightening it all out.
