Mystery Little Clips

This is just another one of Fords mystery little clips that are used to retain the parking light lenses on a 48 coupe, I found rusty ones loose between the stainless trim ring and glass lense, I don't have the slightest idea how they were suppost to work, does anyone have a clue? They show up in the old Fords Chassis Part Catalog as part of the parking light assembly.
