Default Snyders or Randy Gross for rear brake rebuild.

I am going to need to have the rear brakes rebuilt this fall or winter. I see where some like the guy who advertises in the swap section Mel Gross so I assume it is the same as the Randy Gross who some have talked about. My brake drums are not very good shape but hjbs look good backing plates are in bad shape as far as wear.So I don't know which would be best for starters which would be the best cast iron drums or mayby the same Snyders versus Randy or Mel Gross. The levers for main brake shoes and emergency brak shoes are so worn they wiggle but yet they still worked as if nothing was wrong. So far the axle housings look better than any early V8 I have ever had. I had a devil of a time pulling the right rear drum off as the shoe parts were so loose they kept shoes pressed against drum after pulling half way out. I was actually hoping to buy a complete rebuilt rear like I lucked out on the front but so far no close by street rodders have been found. Thanks for any advice,I know it is not going to be cheap.

Mel Gross (RIP) is Randy's father. The Gross' have been doing brakes for a long time. When you call Randy, you know your talking to the man that is actually doing your work. He did mine and I could not be happier.

Most people are recommending Randy Gross. If you want the job done right then he is your man. He will rebuild the backing plates and supply the cast drums and do the whole thing in a heart beat. You will not be out of service long. Another satisfied customer. Jack

I just got a set of front hubs/drums and shoes back from Randy and on the car last night. Very good product and workmanship. 19 days the car was on stands, and three of those are on me...

I just sent him my rear backing plates and hubs for a complete rebuild, including the e-brake. FYI, he does these projects on weekends only, so if your package arrives on Monday it'll have to wait five days to get worked on.

Go with Randy Gross. If you need any advice, just leave him a message and he'll call you back in no time. Always backs up his products as he did with my steering box and cast iron drums. He has great trouble free products.

I just had my rear brake assemblies done by Randy Gross. Drove the car yesterday. What a difference! Spoke with Randy thru the process and he was eager to answer all my questions. My car had no emergency brakes and Randy restored that feature as well. I saved allot in the process.

In the Model A kingdom there is a "go to guy" for just about every aspect of the Model A Ford concerning repair and restoration.

Without a doubt Randy Gross is the "go to guy" concerning brakes and replacement cast iron drums. He certainly has my endorsement.

What/who is the preferred method for shipping from the Midwest to the West Coast for Randy's services?

Besides the fact that he does top quality work, and a quick turn around, (mine arrived to him on Friday, he shipped on Monday), he is a lot less expensive.

I think UPS is a little cheaper for heavy items. I went to the UPS Store and had them package it – was worth it for me because I was insuring the package for $1K and I didn't want to risk a denial of a claim.

Just a sample of Randy's great service, he called to let me know that a previous owner had gone a bit weld-crazy on my rear brakes. They welded, rather than swedged, the lug nut bolts to the hubs, and then welded, rather than riveted, the roller tracks to the backing plate. They'd also replaced several other rivets with bolts. Owing to the extensive and questionable modification, we agreed it was best to scrap my components and rebuild with spares that he had. I really appreciate this attention to detail and flexibility.

Heads up though to anyone reading this thread in the future, check your components for unexpected welding and you could save some shipping costs.
