Default Another way you can be scammed on Ebay

Here is a link to a pile of Model A junk on Ebay. For $5.50 I would not mind adding the junk to my model A junk box, but wait! Check out the shipping cost!

If you could order all those parts new from a vender, it would not be any less expensive to ship them. Looks like enough for a medium flat rate box. At least the shipping cost is plainly stated up front so there would be no chance of a surprise. And, no, they are not my parts!

You should confirm with the seller if the shipping cost is correct. Sometimes when listing ads for ebay it will default the shipping cost of the last ad listed which could be high or low for the listing item. It just might be a mistake.

$149.92 for what looks like would fit in a USPS Flat Rate box ~$15

On the opposite side of things, here's a bunch of stuff with FREE shipping:

I was misreading the shipping cost. That is quite steep!

Depends on where you are -- eBay quotes a different price. FedEx always gouges us here in Alaska something fierce, even though we have one of their largest terminals 5 miles from where I live.

One of the reason's the shipping is higher than the cost is because the seller set it up that way. Ebay gets I think around 10% of auction price and not the shipping. The seller makes out better on the shipping than the auction final. He gets more for his item and Ebay doesn't. Afordman31

I think Ebay takes a percentage of the total cost you bill, including shipping. PayPal takes its part, too.

Having done Ebay a lot, there is a lot involved. Taking photos and setting up the ad is pretty time consuming. Once you sell, you need to print the packing slip, shipping label, find a box, wrap and pack well and take it to the post office or where ever you ship. It all takes time, which you typically cannot recover totally from your shipping cost. What I can't figure out is how can someone in Hong Kong sell something for 99 cents with free shipping and make money?

$26 something to the northwest. I think the fender brace and water pipe are too big for a med flat rate box, large it all might fit. He might have it listed by weight, which might account for the high price to east.

Ebay started including shipping in the fee calculation, as some idiots were selling items for a dollar or two and putting shipping at $100 or more to skirt the items fees. The idiots ruined it for everyone, when eBay decided to stop the scam by the few people that were doing it. Now the item and shipping are added together before the selling fee is calculated. I think this happened 4 or 5 years ago, maybe even longer ago. I am sure eBay didn't mind doing that, as it meant more $$ for them. I wish there was some real competition to eBay.
