Default instrument panel lighjt

I have a instrumental panel with the oval speedometer. The light is in the center of the panel. I removed the panel to reverse the wires on the ammeter as it was reading backwards It reads normal now. I noticed the wire for the light was not connected to anything(I recently acquired the car) Could someone tell me how to wire it up. I tried to connect it to the key and it would only light when the key was off tried the other terminal and it would not work. I do not know how it was wired originally. Thank You.

It mounts to the generator side terminal on the ampere meter.

how will I turn the light on and off? The ammeter terminal is hot all the time and there is no switch between them.

turning the knurled end of the light is the switch. It lifts the bulb off the hot wire.

it connects to the ammeter. Twist the cover to the right to turn it on, twist to the left to turn off.

Since you only need it at night, could it be wired into the headlight circuit so it would only go on when you turn on the headlights?

If that dash light is on for any prolonged time, it gets HOT! When mine ceased to work a while back, I considered wiring it on with the headlights and using an LED globe but it healed itself. It's now not broke so I won't fix it.

I have a '31 with the light buried up in the dash rail. But I wired it to come on whenever the tail lights are on. Don't have to worry about turning it on or off. I will replace the bulb with LED as soon as I determine which LED will work there.

Thanks, Sychro and Carl. Yes, it gets hot with the regular bulb. I agree about replacing the bulb with an LED.

CarlG- our A-13465-L bulb is an LED that works in the stop light, tail light, dash light and dome light. Does not get hot. $7 each at modelastore.com

Thanks for posting your LED info. Have been searching, and have ordered and tried a couple of different LED lamps for the Dash Light - so far not happy. Will be ordering a couple from you next week.

My biggest complaint with the dash light, was it was too bright. Might be an issue with the LEDs as well. I put a 12 volt bulb in to cut the brightness.

CarlG--if you're running 12V this is the ticket ($6.95):

I have one in my dash rail and is a PERFECT FIT and am very happy with it. I will also put one in the cowl lamps and tail light.

Dash Light.I ordered some from these links, did not work, dug down into the specs and they were for 12V. I called them and asked for a 6V version, that exact design was not available in 6v. So I had them recommend a different 6 V, and when tried it was so dim it was useless. Currently, went back to the original incandescent.

Make sure you dig into the specs

One thing to remember. Most LED bulbs are polarity sensitive. I say most because there are some that run a circuit in them to automatically adapt to either polarity, however, they are not common. So, if you are running pos grd make sure the LED bulbs you buy are made for it.
