Unhappy Scam

I sold an original 32 Ford hood to Robert Powers, [email protected]. I advertised as needing work on hood tops, sides are excellent. He received and said not happy. I said send back, he did not and put in a claim with credit card and PayPal . 4 months later they decide in his favor. I am out my $550 and my hood!!
Wow, what a scam to get free parts.
when he told me tops were no good I offered to send him half his money back or return hood for full refund. I will post the texts, and now he tells me to f.... off. Hood was returned!

i
You should definitely get your parts back.
I have heard of this type of scam being used by slime balls.
PayPal and other credit card companies should change their
policy and make the scammer return the part, before giving
the money back to them...

This is one reason that I like a check or money order for payment. I can always wait until a check clears before shipping the part.

Had the same thing happen to me 5 or 6 years ago. Guy got a full refund and kept all the parts. Same deal, paypal. Except i got charged for the return postage and recieved a empty box.

I keep a eye out for this guy all the time because he burned another guy for some model T parts at the same time

And i also offered a full refund , just return me the parts....

karma will get them, but in the mean time how many more people will be victims till they get caught

He can change his name, email address but usually not his mailing address. Please tell us the address you sent the hood to. Might help keep him from burning someone else.

I would rant and rave at EBAY/PayPal and the buyer. If no satisfaction, I would take a quick vacation to the address the hood was delivered to and talk face to face. Hopefully without violence.

I am aware of a similar experience , strangely enough someone called the persons utility company and ordered the electric to be disconnected and the water to be finalized their gas to be turned off, the mail was re-routed to Japan. the funds were never recovered and the parts were not returned but in the winter time it was a bad thing to happen , must be what they call karma ?

In some States, the local Police have a program called, "Keep The Peace" or equivalent where a Police officer will oversee a meeting where there may be an adversarial situation. Make some phone calls, have any and all paperwork handy and get justice.

Being as it appears your sale was made thru a Fordbarn ad, Ryan might be interested in the circumstances as he strongly recommends only the use of Paypal in the classified sections of the HAMB.

Chucks32, I've had some similar situations happen here on FB and on other internet website's, with both buying and selling.
With no disrespect to you whatsoever, and with no intention to minimize your pain over this particular situation.... I'd like to see Robert Powers post his side of the story here as well, since there's always two sides to any story. Now if he's unwilling to post this here in a manner that's believable, then that would say it all....in my opinion.

hi Chuck, could this damage he claims exceed the damage that you think
it had. If so, then Did it get damaged in shipping ? What carrier was it
shipped with, and was it insured ?
Either way, you should at least get your hood back at a fair cost for shipping
back to you..... my 2cts.

What would really help would be the email or letter that you received from PayPal telling you not to send it back. Without that, your assertion is quite hard to believe. I don't think PayPal would tell you that without being instructed to by the seller.

Robert, would be interesting for those follow this post to see those pictures, and if you still have that hood, why not just send it back to Chucks32 now, especially if you have been reimbursed??

I can´t imagine a cardcompany or paypal advices not to return goods to a seller...especiallly if seller agrees on refund on return....would be against all normal return policies.
If Paypal actually have said don´t return the goods and keep the money i see all major companies using Paypal blowing a fuse calling paypal support with pitchforks and torches in hand...

I've always heard that there ARE two sides to every story...and then, there is THE TRUTH! If you DID NOT scam Chuck, then how did you end-up with his HOOD AND the MONEY?

It's obvious by looking at your history here on the 'Barn that you regularly partake of the free advertising that Ryan so generously allows us. Have ya ever sent Ryan a "thank you" note, or maybe a small donation to help keep this "free" forum operating? Seems like "Something For Nothing" comes into play fairly regularly for you. For once, do the right thing and SEND CHUCK'S HOOD BACK TO HIM, DUDE, on YOUR dime! DD

If you got your money back without returning the part, you are a thief. Just as if someone sent money and never got the part. The only "2 sides" to this story is the disagreement on the quality/condition of the part.

Ryan, thank you for getting involved and helping resolve this. We know you dislike drama here, and could have deleted this entire post, but this thread will be a good lesson for all of us, especially those who are selling or buying on your websites.

Let me start by saying I don't know either of the players in this thread and just volunteered to post these pictures from Robert to help everyone understand what is being discussed. I think they should have exchanged pictures before they got started.

The original poster said the tops were dented but the hood sides were ok.
1932 Ford louvered hood sides alone will usually fetch over $600 for a pair.

So some credit card worker is suppose to make a fair assessment on value
of this complete hood. You were lucky if there were any hood tops there at all.

I don't want to start a debate. Shit is shit. But they look like solid pieces that need work. Hell we bitch about aftermarket stuff and these are original and usable. if you didn't get them for free or $50. well.... return

I didn't follow everything posted, so layoff.

I had a few fenders sent by greyhound. around $50. I'd guess it's at least 25-30$ ups? But I'm not a ups guy (not sure they know either as they deliver).

I'm not letting you off that easy. Shipping on something like a hood would have to be a lot, which may factor into this in a major way.

I'm in shipping, have been for close to 10 years. I take no sides in this dispute. From my experience shipping a folded up hood properly packaged to avoid damage by the package handlers from AR to NY would likely be in the $60 to $80 dollar range, +/- shipped via FedEx. Insurance would cost extra, likely in the $10 range. Cost of shipping is determined by 3 factors. How big a box, how much it weighs and how far it's going from destination to delivery. This is true for the 3 major carriers, USPS, FedEx and UPS.

A half an hour working that hood top around an oxygen bottle puts that hood top in a "near ready for finishing" condition. For someone to make a determination that he doesn't like the hood so he'll just keep it AND THE MONEY......ain't much different than test-driving a used car and deciding he don't like the paint job, so he just drives it home for free. Thats what I thought and ive fixed them that looked like that
but its even easier in a slip roll.

The worst would be split edges.

But the real point is, the buyer got a refund and has no right to keep the hood. He probably got reimbursed for the original cost of shipping to boot.

With old stuff condition can be debatable, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

If your not happy and the seller offered a refund RETURN IT!

It's pretty obvious that his guy is a jerk. I've never heard of a credit card company telling some one to keep an item after the person has got a refund for the item. I'm still waiting to see the documentation from the buyer where the credit card company told him to keep the hood. My guess is we will never see it. I hope Ryan pulls the plug on this guy.

The few times I have had the credit card company get involved with a dispute the first questions they asked were "How long ago was it purchased and did you returned it?". They wanted it returned before they would finalize the charge back.

Something has been altered concerning his posts since yesterday. Yesterday, he had 19 posts, 18 of which were ads in the FREE "Swap Meet" section peddling some of his own junk. In other words, one of those parasites taking advantage of the site for his own gain without offering any sort of socially redeeming value in return. DD

Post us when and if you get the hood back.

The issue as I see has nothing to do with the condition of the hood. If he didn't like it then fine- he returns it and gets his money back as you offered . Getting his money back and keeping the goods is just plain wrong and not a straight up way to operate. I hope Ryan has terminated his membership as , in my opinion , we don't need people like him on here - They add nothing to our hobby other than showing us how not to act -Karl

Glad you got it back . . . that was an important milestone in this situation.

I'm not here to defend the guy when he didn't ship it back, but now that he did, I'm hearing a bit of "I sold you a nice hood" type of perspective, when it sounds like it may not have been quite as nice as represented. And you mentioned a price of $550 (not cheap) and it is not inexpensive to ship parts of this size around (on anybody's dime).

I know this is a completely subjective opinion (and everybody has their own), but I'd love to see some good quality pictures of what was sold for the price. Help us understand what this deal really was? Why, because the representations of "the deal" matters to all sides.

How was the hood originally represented and what did the guy actually receive? Please post some pics . . . this will enable us all to form our own opinions.

I've learned over the years - in most cases, the truth tends to be in the middle . . .

Show us what you sold . . .

As previously I don't think the condition of the hood is relevant. If it is not as described then the buyer returns it for a full refund as offered . What you don't do is get a refund and keep the hood - Its the same as selling the hood accepting payment and not sending it- Karl

Again - I agree that the hood should have come back . . . my only point is that shipping can be very expensive for an item like this - and I was just interested in seeing what this hood was all about. He can decide to post pictures or not - and I am glad he got it back. This is one reason it is hard to buy items like this via the internet . . . unless you know the guy you're buying from.

I'd just like to re-iterate my appreciation for how Ryan C. (The Boss) handled this situation from the beginning, especially the eventual "dumping" of this guy who hasn't a clue. None of us could benefit from any association with that kind of mindset. I hope that Chuck sees fit to thank Ryan profusely for saving the bacon. Is this a cool place, or what? DD

Ryan, The hood was returned to me! I want to thank you and everyone that posted! I truly appreciate it! We are all in this hobby to have fun and help each other with knowledge and to find parts we need. Many great people out there!
