Default Interior trim panels

Hi everyone, what are the interior panels made from in a 30 Town sedan? Specifically, what does the fabric attach to, card board, wood, or is the fabric just stretched and attached directly to the wood body structure? Thanks!

Door panels and other related interior panels have a very heavy cardboard backing. In fact the term "cardboard" is somewhat misleading and perhaps a "press board" might be a better term. I'm not an upholsterer, and I am quite certain that there are many others infinitely more qualified to respond than I, but perhaps this may get you started on the right track. My understanding is that the only interior areas that would not have a cardboard backing would be perhaps the headliner. Hope this helps.

These panels are then nailed with 5/8 in. finishing nails (very small heads). Then the cloth is picked up with a needle to pull the cloth over the head of the nail. The nail head disappears and the panel is secured in place. Its like magic! Ed

Chip board and panel board are other common names. A person needs a material that will not react badly to moisture. Pre-cut panel boards are available from some of the model A parts sources that handle upholstery materials.

The upholstery supply industry sell a number of these materials and also source others. Not all trimmers do the same quality of work but some come up with modern innovations that make sense. With panel board materials, a trimmer sometimes needs a material that they can sew to in some cases. Plywood and sheet metal don't work for this. Some even use fiberglass materials that they form themselves but that stuff isn't practical for antique cars.
