Default Model A and AA Tool Equipment...

Is anyone collecting the FORD tools that were supplied by FORD to work on the Model A/AA vehicles?

And I am not talking about those that were furnished with each Model A and AA as it came off the asembly line.

These tools would have the following designations on them "5-Z-XXXX" (X ='s numbers).

Most of these are spelled out in the FORD Service Bulletins and Service Letters.

Thanks.

I picked up a 5-Z-1900 wrench this past weekend which I think is to remove the front crank pulley bolt/ratchet on the A, but mostly I have a pile of the T era Z tools as that is where I started - in T's that is - the A is still new territory. Not sure how many continued into the A years from the T but I'm sure a few did.

Was it you that was looking for an auto lift last winter? I looked at mine once the snow melted - it is a Weaver lift 4-post cable drive unit which I doubt was what you were looking for.

Mark, if you decide to trade any tools I have some duplicates in my 5z Model T tools and I see no need for having more than one of each. A lot more interested in the Model A 5z tools than those for the T. I do not think there were any carryovers from the T era to the A . If there was I would think it would be noted in the Model A Service Bulletins. Rod

Not that I'm ah needing one, but how hard to find is the 5 Z 1832 cam nut wrench and how much do they usually go for ? Gary in MN pictured one the other day on the cam nut thread. I started looking at some of my old tools yesterday. I've got a box of tools in another building i've got to check. Too hot here to do much .

I have seen the cam nut wrench on ebay two or three times a year. I think they sold in the $60 - $100 range.

Many tools do not carry the 5Z prefix and can be for A or T 24Z preifix is generally for a gage of some sort for setting or checking. Bruce McCalleys Ford T book has a good listing of tools in the back with many of the Z tools which were superceded or changed. Knowing the shapes or sizes of Z tools is important as many of the numbers can be difficult to read if rusty or greasy.

Were the tools painted or Parkerized?

Steve,
I collect the specialty and service tools as well as the KR Wilson tools.... in the back of the July '31 parts price list there is a list of about 20 tools or so that were specialty. Included in these are the handiest and most useful... the cam nut wrench, the crank nut wrench, the gas gauge set, both inner and outer, and of course the pinion nut wrenches. Most of the others are speed handle types, and other more common specialty wrenches that common sockets will duplicate. I've not tried too hard to collect them as their use and value isn't there... I'd rather put it to the KRW collection. I'm down to just a couple I don't have.... some are very useful, many are wall hangers. I have about 250 + pieces between "A" and V8. Last year I picked up an original Duby alignment gauge. It is awesome!

The original Model A I believe were all the 5Z designations..... Values on the ones I listed above typically go for $60-$100 ish as sated above. Looking at the 5 or 6 1832 wrenches I have now there are some size variations in them..... and they were factory... not modified later as you can tell from the cut marks...

I am going to have a service tool seminar at the Marc membership national next April in St. Louis. I would love some input and help from folks. If you're coming bring your tools! You guys area great knowledge base...

Thanks,

It would be interesting to see a picture of the crank nut tool. I sometimes find old tools at trade days events. It would be good to know what the tool looks like.

Here is a picture of 5 Z 1900 crank nut tool. Just to be clear Model A tools may have a 5 Z prefix but many Model T tools had the same prefix.

So back to my question. Were these tools painted or Parkerized. This wrench looks to be Parkerized.

Likely most were Japan Black. My pinion nut wrench appeared to be. That is the only one I have so far. One of my 3z T wrenches was Machine Grey. Rod
