Default Aluminum on aluminum!

Picture of my first aluminum Winfield on the first aluminum block. I hope to have first OP machining finished on the block within a week. Anxious to see this one built and running.

oooh.

I know theres multiple threads on these engine and it may have already been mentioned:

Whats the weight savings between standard iron block iron head VS aluminum? Curious as to how much that would affect the power to weight ratio (combined with lightened fly wheel could be a snappy little guy)

May I ask what aluminum alloy you chose for the block and the head?

Great! Sound like a invite for the engine builders... If you end up doing this yourself, I surely would like to drive and see or give a hand.

Tod,

Do you know if the engine builders are set up and experienced enough to build an engine with an aluminum block? Would they need special equipment to handle an aluminum block? Would the engine have to have inset bearings?

The weight savings on the block and the head would be in the neighborhood of 50 lbs. I am also about to machine some aluminum flywheel housings for Snyder, which would save a little more weight. The block and the head will easily handle the low HP produced by these engines. Shaving weight might help with pep.

That's great!

Now in your spare time you need to start making then in 1/4 scale so I can mount one on my bike.

The weight savings sure would be a plus for the Pietenpol airplane builders !

What is this "spare time" of which you speak?
