Russian Model A/AA engine numbering system
Did Russia use the USA list of motor numbers when numbering their Model A/AA engines or did they have a seperate numbering system?
Thanks. Pluck |

My Russian B does have a seven (7) digit number stamped on the pad. Pad is in approximately same location. There are no stars on pad and there is no letter preceding 7 numbers. And, the 7 numbers are approx. 1/2" tall. This info off of an engine straight out of Russia and in cosmolene(?). Looks like different numbering system.. More info/pictures needed, just let me know Last edited by hardtimes; 08-10-2017 at 12:59 PM. Reason: .......... |

Re: Russian Model A/AA engine numbering system
Knock-down kit Ford A/AA sold to the USSR did use USA engine numbers. Only a handful of these cars have survived.
Russian made GAZ A blocks (produced until the early 1940s) had their own engine number system. Russian made GAZ B blocks (made from 1936) had a separate engine number system to the GAZ A blocks. Note that GAZ A and B blocks were produced in parallel for several years; A block production did not stop when the B block was introduced. GAZ A, and B blocks also had a 6 to 8 digit casting date on the block and head, with some blocks using Roman numerals for the month. Steve and Hardtimes, do your engines have any casting numbers? What are the engine numbers? In the late 1950s B block production was moved to the ZMZ plant (Zavolzhsky Motorny Zavod). These blocks may or may not have an understandable casting date. ZMZ produced B blocks into the 1970s.

Re: Russian Model A/AA engine numbering system
Do we know how many A & AA vehicles were built in Russia?
I wonder if total world production could be closer to 6 million with there production included? |

Exact numbers hard to know, and depends if you include armored cars using a GAZ made Ford type engine and chassis, but certainly no less than one million GAZ A/AA/AAA were made from 1932-1950.
