Ace mechanic is back with a wiring question
So I bought a wiring harness from a dealer that I am told weaves their own looms. All went well until I got the headlight things all straightened out, ie. faulty repo bulb holders and resulting shorts and opens. (No idea where these came from.) Fixed them my way and then yesterday the mail brought MARC's magazine with an article on how to properly restore them. My way works also, I used a small file, JB Weld and the wire wheel to get everything to function as it should and avoid the problem of the contacts touching each other . Then it was off to attach the harness to the brake switch and the stop lights. I read Les's instructions on routing and such, found the wires to the stop light switch don't want to reach it without being routed over the battery and when I finally reached the rear of the car the wires to the left rear tail light were about one foot too short. Luckily I hadn't thrown the old harness out so I have properly color coded wires to extend the harness to reach. Seems odd to me that a brand new harness won't stretch from the light switch to the tail light. Anyone know the true measurement for that rear part of the harness? While I was removing the old one I found it had also been spliced into to make it reach also.

Re: Ace mechanic is back with a wiring question
Seems to me that when I replaced the harness on my 29 ccpu the main harness was a little short i.e. it did not reach all the way to the tail light. But the tail light had this section which made up the difference.
Read the description...it suggests all repro harness's need this extension... https://parts.modelastore.com/show_Product.asp?ID=4418

Mine stopped short of the rear too, but it looks like it is supposed to. See the Service Bulletin page 440.

Re: Ace mechanic is back with a wiring question
The drum taillight harness should reach all the way to the light, with no extension.
I was sure to specify that I had a drum taillight when I bought the harness from SVF. |

Re: Ace mechanic is back with a wiring question
Davey, did you route the new harness same as the old? My 29 is a later version. There was no switch or wiring harness when I got it. I ordered a US made harness from Berts and experienced none of the problems you are having. Wires to the brake light switch went around the battery not over it. Tail light wires reached the harness with no problem.
