Default Lightened Flywheel

Several years ago I bought the engine from my Great Grandpa's Model A tudor from my Great Uncle. He did not store things well, so I figured it to be nearly a total loss. When we were moving it into the parts barn we removed the head and flywheel and discovered it had a lightened flywheel. It is heavily pitted so it will need refurfaced. Over the weekend I dug it out and took some pic's. Now I am curious as to how much surfacing it will need and how far you can surface them and still be usable? Anyone have that spec as measured from the crank flange mounting surface? Thanks Rod

To me it looks like the flathead flywheel that came with my 36 --it will bolt on an A crankshaft.
It also could be an A flywheel cut to the V8 style

It had an A style pressure plate on it, so I am guessing it is a cut down A flywheel likely lightened by Fred Booth who owned the local repair shop from the 40's through early 80's when he passed away. He had a great reputation for doing quality work on A's and flatheads. Rod

Rod ...I don't see the bolt pattern for the model A pressure plate, I see a v/8 style? Have you put it next to an A? Dudley

Not yet. I drug it out of the parts barn and took it into Dad's shop, that is about all that has been done so far. Dad was wanting to use it in his A, so I gave it to him to use. He has not taken it to the machine shop yet for resurfacing. When I go down there this weekend I will look things over better. Rod

Rod...the bolt pattern on an A, crank, is the same as a v/8 I believe. Dudley

They are, was thinking you guys were talking about the pressure plate bolt pattern, that is what I was planning to compare, just for clarification. I have a V-8 preeure plate off of the 37, which brings me to another future question. Who rebuilds the V-8 pressure plates with the flyweights? This will be a good way not to end up with the 8N pressure plate without them. Its good to have parts to choose from. Rod

The place I talked to locally said they send them out and they could not gaurantee I would end up getting mine back. I do not want to take a chance of getting one back without the flyweights. No lacal shop that I know of messes with them. Most send them to Omaha. I might check with Inland Truck next time I am in North Platte. Rod

Does the V8 flywheel allow the A starter to work correctly (mesh)? I think I tried one once and had problems but don't remember what they were.

Might give these people a call, a friend used them and was happy and they will rebuild your core.

Rod, I bought my pressure plate with flyweights from NAPA. Part #CA5102
If you want one rebuilt they may be able to point you in the right direction.

It looks to me like an early V8 flywheel. It might all bolt together but the ring gear will be in the wrong location. Check before you go too far.

I checked with them on sending this one off of the 37 in and they do not have any source. Also it sounded like it was a crap shoot on if the new ones availiable had the flyweights, based on a string of posts awhile back. Looks like sending it to KC through ITP is the closest option I have. Waiting on confirmation to make sure I get mine back. Omaha Clutch and Brake is my next choice after that. I used them for a customers multiple disc clutch. It was $104 per disc at that time plus shipping each way and tax. Their quality was pretty good and had quick turnaround time. I have not contacted them about this one yet, but will be doing so soon. Rod
