Crankshaft Pulley
#1) I'm going with an electric fan and want to remove the crankshaft powered fan. Is the dual wide-belt pulley on the crankshaft a one or two piece unit? Can the fan pulley portion be removed?
#2) I noticed when I removed the dual belt pulley, the groove that woodruff key slides into had widened about 1/32" over the past 61 years exactly where the woodruff key sits. Could this affect the timing? #3) Also going with a one piece front seal w/ the nongrooved pulley hub extension. Haven't tried to remove the grooved pulley hub extension...yet. How tight of a fit is it? If it is tight what is the recommended way to remove it? |

Re: Crankshaft Pulley
The pulleys can be modified for single sheave on the 8BA, 59A, or 21A/29A type engines if you have the need.
I would check and see if the woodruff key fits the pulley tightly. You may have a "too small" woodruff key. They are made in a lot of sizes. If your crank slot is too loose you may have to open the pulley slot up to mach for a new key fit. To pull the spiral groove sleave off, you will have to pull the crankshaft timing gear too since that is the normal method of removal. |

Re: Crankshaft Pulley
Rather than remove the spiral sleeve, there is a smooth tube repair kit that is used. It is available thru NAPA stores. I'll try to locate the number. It makes your life much easier.

1.The pulley is one piece. The "extra" sheave can be machined off but does not separate as a component design. 2.No, the relationship of the pulley to the crankshaft key does not affect timing. Apparently yours has been loose and allowed to "work" back and forth. If you maintain tightness in the future the worn keyway or key will not be problematic. 3.The pulley hub extension is only removable on engines produced after the 59A. It will have to be machined off if yours is a 59 style engine. If your "extension" is of the 8BA style it is a very tight fit on the crankshaft to prevent oil leakage. The usual removal method is by removing the pressed on timing gear. As a further point I will say that I have used the one-piece seal on the spiral grooved extensions without any problems. |
