Default Setting a 34 speedometer to 00000

I did this along time ago, but can’t remember how, and also if it was a huge challenge, that could turn into a huge disaster…

I have a nice show restored speedometer that I want to put into a build I am doing, but want to zero it out. Any suggestions on the process or should I just forget it, don’t want to mess it up…

…oh yea, and based on my calculations, if I just used a speedo cable and a drill, it would have to run for over ten hours a day for over a month to get to zero….

Take it to a used car dealer. They are experts at turning back odometers

I sent mine to Bob's Speedometer (1-800-592-9673). They can reset the mileage when they clean and inspect the unit. Remember that most states have a requirement to register any rollback of the mileage to protect a future buyer from being misled. Check with your local department to determine the rule.

I bet you could do it yourself., remove the screws on the back of the case and it will slide off off from the chrome bezel, face plate and glass. Now remove the shaft with gear and decal numbers.

Harry Warburton, 252-258-1530 will do it correctly with very reasonable charge.

Digger, Let it be. Why open a can of worms if it ain't broke?
It only adds to the provenance of your vehicle.
I think most appreciate seeing original mileage on a speedometer.

With three different manufacturer's designs, there is no one-size-fits-all method other than the month-long version with a drill.

There are stick-on speedo numbers that can work well. You don't even have to remove the number wheels to change the recorded mileage. Just place them on so they read 000000. I made my own stick-on and they have been working for 20 years.

I just sold a really nice 4 digit unit to a Barner, good for him and that’s great, didn’t know/forgot about the 4 digit trip odo for Deluxe cars.

BTW CA is mileage exempt on these old cars, makes no matter

Way back when I was green and simple, I worked as an auto elec in a shop servicing a bunch of (dodgy) used car lots.

Resetting odometers was common request, but only the boss would do it

The way the boss used to do it: Get a broken hacksaw blade and grind it down to a thin strip. Maybe 40mm long by say 5mm high. File it down so it's very thin and can be slid between the odometer wheels (without damaging them) to reach the drive gear behind.

By sliding the 'tool' between the odometer wheels it should be possible engage the odometer wheel drive gear and 'flick' it to the desired setting.

Each odometer wheel has its own gear so each odometer wheel must be manipulated to get the desired setting.

It's very possible this technique damages the odometer.

Don't know about a '34 speedometer but I bought a NOS Stewart Warner speedometer for my '54 Ranch Wagon from Rusty at Speedometer service in Colorado Springs, CO. It had been sitting on the shelf for a long time so he went through it to make sure it was in correct working order. He asked me if I wanted it set to zero which he did at my request.

Had to grin at the response: "Take it to a used car dealer. They are experts at turning back odometers."
