Default Alaska earthquake

Just heard there was a 7.0 earthquake near the Anchorage area.....no other word yet, but certainly hope our Alaska friends, including Carl, are ok.

Thanks for your concerns. We did have a 7.0 earthquake followed up 5 minutes later with a 5+ aftershock. Over the past 24 hours there have been hundreds more after shocks, a lot of them being in the 5+ range. While there was lots of shake rattle and roll, there was no loss of life or injuries. Just lots of clean up and road repair. Schools were closed on Friday and won’t reopen till next Wednesday. Suspended ceilings and plate glass in office buildings did not fair too well. The Model A guys I have talked to have no damage to their cars. It will be a good while before we get back to “normal” but we will make it.

Attached is a picture of a freeway off ramp about a mile from our home.

There have been over 2,000 after shocks since last Friday’s biggie. Most of them have been in the range of 4 and under. While those that are 2 and above are felt, they are more or less “oh, here another one “.

On the positive side of things, that off ramp near my house that I posted the picture of was related in 72 hours of the quake. Schools are still out till next week. A couple of them were too far damaged and the students will be taken to other schools.

Things are slowly but surely getting back to a sence of normal, but it will be a good while before things are fixed. My house and cars are ok. I consider myself very fortunate indeed.

Hi Barners,

Here in Fairbanks, being 350 miles North of Anchorage, we only had a little shaking, which isn't out of the ordinary most anytime.

Here is a link to the Alaska Earthquake Center here in Fairbanks:

https://earthquake.alaska.edu/earthquakes

From AEC yesterday:
The strongest aftershock, a magnitude 5.7 just three miles north of Anchorage, struck six minutes after the mainshock. As of this update, there have been over 1,400 recorded aftershocks including 17 with magnitudes greater than 4. We have not identified a foreshock for this earthquake.

All available DOT&PF bridge inspectors are in Southcentral Alaska and are conducting technical bridge inspections on 243 bridges in the earthquake-affected area. Inspectors have completed and cleared 183 bridges.

The Alaska Railroad is damaged between Fairbanks and Anchorage, but is expected to be running in the next day or so. This causes our US Mail to be slower and l notice that the store shelves are empty of Tortillias.

I will post more updates as l find them.

Darryl in Fairbanks

The screen shot was from yesterday, red dots are 24 hours or less old.
