Cooling system Fan on my 47 Deluxe
I have a 47 Deluxe convertible with a cooling fan that does not seem to be working. I was told this weekend it should have a wire going into the lower radiator hose to a temp sensor. It has one wire coming out of the back of the fan bracket and nothing else. I looked in my shop manual, and the only fan that was showed was one with 90 weight gear oil in it, not like mine. any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Cooling system Fan on my 47 Deluxe
The stock fan should have the oil reservoir, and no wire connection. My best guess is that someone at some time was having cooling problems and installed an aftermarket fan. Look around he dash to see if there is a switch. I have had a '47 convertible for over 25 years. The only change was to install stock blades on a ball bearing hub after the oil filled type caused problems.

Re: Cooling system Fan on my 47 Deluxe
This is what an original fan on your '47 Convertible should look like. It runs off a pulley from the crank and has no temperature sensor.
IMG_0998 1947 Fan.jpg By chance, do you have an aftermarket electric fan that's replaced your original? |

Re: Cooling system Fan on my 47 Deluxe
Do you have an electric variable speed fan that was offered in the 40's? if so it is supposed to work with a temp sensor that varies current with the temperature of the system, I have two new old stock fans but I don't have an extra sensor, the fans don't actually lock up they use electro magnetism to vary the fan speed as needed depending on the amount of electrical current passing through the sensor in relation to the demand, and yes the instructions show the sensor to be mounted in the lower hose. a picture would help to clarify the type you are talking about. fan kit -pn#59a8665 , thermostat control pn #59a8654.
