Default Spring Washer for Roadster Stanchion Wing Nuts?

Hi,

I can't find a source for the small stock spring washers used underneath the 1932 roadster stanchion wing nuts. Nothing by Roy N or available in a small OD. The washer should be 3/8" ID by 9/16" OD. Stock hardware for these is 3/4" OD. Anyone located these?

I'm assuming it's hidden. Can you use one of those split washers that you can get at a hardware store or would that not have enough spring to it?

Yes, but they''re actually too thick. Probably nothing is really needed but a thin spring or "wave" washer would be good. I bought some but the outside diameter is too large, 3/4" OD or and looks bad.

Thanks

We sell a thin flat stainless washer with the 3/8 id and 9/16 od. I could not find a source for a belleville or curved spring washer with those dimensions either.

If you are really hard core have someone laser or water jet cut washers and make a simple hand hammer curving die to make your own.

Thanks Karl,

I should have mentioned that I couldn't find a suitable Belleville washer either. No, I'm not that hard core! If these loosen up too often, I'll look into the thin washer, I assume LW from you.

You suggested something that has me thinking though. I amy buy some thin SS flat washers and with a suitable driver, bang into some soft pine and make my own "Belleville.

Have you tried McMaster-Carr. If it's not listed they usually can get it for you.

The washer, 34907-S7, is only under the lower wing nut. This is per assembly sketch, SK-5084, on file at the Benson Ford. Washer 34907-S7 is an internal tooth lock washer and is available at most any hardware.

Hi,

I did check McMaster but they don't carry it.

The engineering drawing is great! I like the spring washer though as shown in the "1932 Ford Book". with chrome on chrome, I'd prefer not to biting into it with the rough toothed washers,

I'm leaning toward making my own SS spring washer.

Thanks!

Hi,

I went to my nearby and well stocked hardware store this afternoon and bought some 8mm CS wave and 1/4" SS flat washers. Both of these were close to the 9/16" OD that I was after. I decided to try to use the wave washers first.

I clamped the edge tightly in my vice and started with an 11/32" drill bit. This was close to the hole size as is and was just a cleanup. I then went up to a 23/64", drilling slowly from both sides and cleaning up burrs with a sharp 3/8" rat tail file. I then did the same with a 3/8" bit. They came out great and I'm happy with the results.

Check page 200 of the Macs 2016-2017.

They have them listed.

Hi,

I don't have one of Mac's catalogs but did look at all the fasteners online. They do have wind wing washers but those are 5/16" ID, i.e. too small. Do you have a part number form the catalog?

Thanks

These guys are well known suppliers to industry and aerospace. Here is one of their parts that looks similar to what is described (lots of choices):

http://www.seastrom-mfg.com/washerde...ber=5806-127-3

Certainly easier than making them.

Those from seastrom would sure work. The wind wing washers are too samll in inside diameter, only 5/16". I know since I already had some of those.

I'm all set now with my homemade ones.

Thanks everyone for your help!
