Default 33 ignition switch

I have had the ignition switch out of our 33 as it gave a bit of trouble, (now fixed)
I have, in my box of spare switches and lock parts there is a little plate under the switch block itself.
The one on my 33 is not there,
I couldn't,t find it in the parts book , but in some info I have on repairing the 35/36 lock assy they say not to leave it out,
My question is , is there supposed to be one under the the switch assy on the 33.
The switch was the problem causing hard and sometimes no start, stopping and missing over a two month period that took a long time to find, thanks to my son Hayden who rightly diagnosed the switch.
Thanks Lawrie

I asked Mike Driskel at 3rd Gen Automotive the following question after I purchased and received the ignition kit he sells:

"I'm not familiar with the metal plate that came with this kit. My original '34 Ford does not have this piece. Please enlighten me as to its purpose and how it is installed"....

Mike's response was: - "The metal plate with the tab is only used on 1932 and Early 1935 Fords. Sorry for the confusion "

That plate with the tab is necessary on the 32's to keep the lever itself in its vertical stationary position. On the '32 lever collar there is a slot that that tab goes in.

Thanks for the reply,
I left it out ,
I thought about it ,and reasoned we have had our 33 for about 25 yrs and never had it in and had no problems ,
what a great resource is the barn.

32-36 has the plate to prevent the switch lever from moving sidewise (L or R)

I dont recall seeing that plate before. I had two column drops to make one in my 34, wonder if thats why it failed to start last month for the first and only time? Like GB predicted, it started rite up a week later with no audience !

That piece is called a guide plate & from what I could find is supposed to be installed until 39. I'm have some difficulties get my lever to turn back & forth & am thinking about leaving it out . Hard to find any information on the ignition switches. I even tried to make one & leave that tab off no workie tho. Funny it worked when I last used it to go to coffee last year.

I could not find the plate or the part number in both my 28-35 Australian parts book or my original green bible one.

I have only seen them on '32's and rebuilt a few of them.I don't remember the '33- 37's I have worked on had that guide plate. On the 33-34 the lever is on the outside and not in a slot.Maybe someone can post some pics if they have a 33-37 apart.'38-'39 have an entirely different switch on the back and never have worked on those.

48-3736 plate (switch lever retainer) has the 1935 part number prefix and was used from 35-37. The 32 with the bulls eye die cast thumb switch used it since the switch lever has the slot on the rear for the plate. I do not have a parts book that list the 3736 basic part number for 32. Below is the original 32 and early 35 bulls eye switch lever and the later 36 levers with the slot for the plate.

I am sure the plate is used in 33-34 but not to retain the switch lever. I would have to disassemble my car so it would be best if someone else could post the back of the 33-34 column drop. Again I can not locate an earlier part number for the plate used on the 32-34.

Terry,There are no provisions(slot) for the plate in all the 33-34's I have done, maybe 4.In the 35-37 neither. I can see why its used in the '32 because if not when the key is turned that tab keeps the toggle stationary,if not it binds.Removed a comment I made on the 38-39 switches thinking they were different.Sheldon

The parts catalogs only list parts that were serviced, not every last part that made up the whole. The subject plate evidently was not offered as a service part.

I've several '33-'34 locks apart and there is no provision for the tab on the subject plate to fit into the center partially-rotating shaft where the tab would protrude into the outer lock housing. I agree that the plate was reinstated for the '35 lock.

I don't recall ever working on a '35 with the bulls eye toggle but the classic '36 an '37 and neither had that plate or they were missing from the get go.

Yes you are correct the plate is not used on the 33-34 ignition switch. My memory is corrected. Thank You Sheldon and David.

I can only speak for the big trucks. My 34 BB has the plate but my 40 and 47 do not. I have had all three apart. I was surprised to find it in the 34 and it fell out on the floorboard when I took the switch apart. As I recall, it took some contemplating but it would only fit back in one way.

The 34 BB has a drop like a '32 or at least the ones I have seen. That why.

Here are pics of a mechanism which is 36-37. As you can see the shaft is round, not like a '32 or the '35 that uses the bulls eye toggle with 2 flat sides.A bit confusing but the pin that actually moves the brush in the switch is missing. The small button on the left is spring loaded and engages to lock the steering when key is removed and you spin the wheel. The large flat slot is what the lock cyl (opposite key end) fits in.The splined end is where a chrome button presses on.I couldn't figure out a better way to explain it.

The plate with the tab is used on 1932's and Early Production 1935's from the ones I have taken apart, but we still include it in the kit shown above as a just in case measure
