Default 1939 Ford Hinges

Does anyone have any tips for drilling out the riveted, door side, of 1939 Door hinges? Besides being careful that is.

Thanks

1. Don't.
2. If possible restore the hinge in place.
3. If you do have to remove the hinge consider the hinge or the mounting area on the door or both as SCRAP. If the door is bad then cut around the hinge to remove the mount and remove the door metal from the hinge from the "back side".
4. Often the hinge is also spot welded to the door.

5. Getting the hinge off is the easy part... putting it back on is where the real fun begins.

If you MUST remove that part of the hinge, drill three (not two) .125" holes through both the hinge and door. When reinstalling, place three .125" pieces of drill rod in those holes to regain location. Not perfect by any means but will get you darn close.

Here is a picture of the problem. As you can see the pin will not go in all the way. There is a misalignment of the bottom of the hinge, door part, and the body half of the hinge.

I bought the car this way and I did not catch the problem. Both doors are the same but the other side, passenger, not as bad of a misalignment. There is a very slight up and down movement, maybe 1/8" or so at the back of the door.

The reason I considered the hinge removal is I got new hinges, Bob Drake, with the car. The bottom were already changed. The top hinges are also tack welded.

I believe that if I pulled the pins a rod should go straight between the upper and lower hinge. That would tell me which hinge is off, door or body.

I wonder why the body was painted with this problem.
