Thanks for posting that Sheldon. I've been trying to determine what the brackets for a 37 luggage rack would look like. I have a very nice 37 luggage rack, but unfortunately it did not come with the correct brackets.

I've had a couple of NOS '37 racks over the years, but like John, without the brackets, which were originally sold separately depending on body type. Years ago there was a fellow in northeastern Ohio who was reproducing the brackets, but he had to give it up due to failing health. I've not seen any original or reproduction brackets since, but then again I might not recognize them beyond what is shown on page 218 of the DeAngelis/Francis book.

The brackets with the rack on ebay do not look exactly like those in the book photo, but it's hard to tell with certainty. As Ford did not manufacture the racks that it sold, those may or may not be for a Ford. I hope someone with certain knowledge will enlighten us.

The stainless on one pictured on pg 218 in the DeAngeles book is completely different than the '37 listed.I'll take a pic of it and post it.

I don't think so.With the tailgate folding down that might interfere with the rack. You see in the pic I posted on the sedan the trunk lid lifts up.

Interesting. So I'm guessing the rack was generic "one-size-fits-all" and the brackets were specific to the car's make/body style?

Can't quite tell from the pic - when the rack is down, does it fit between the bumper guards or over them?

Some time ago, I was searching the Internet trying to find pictures of '37 Ford luggage rack brackets, and found these....
Can anyone confirm that these are actually for '37?

John,

The illustration below is from the Early Ford V8 Club's 1937 book. It would appear that the brackets in your photo are not for a '37, but those with the one on ebay are.

John,

I spoke too soon. On further reflection, the brackets in your photo are for non-trunk '37 models. Sorry for the confusion.

Sheldon, personally I’ve owned 9 1937 racks both NOS and used, but only one set of brackets over the years. I don’t think the racks are all that rare but the brackets sure must be

It appears with 4 unused holes that some trim is missing off the current rack?

Those four holes are to secure a trunk on the rack with bolts through the bottom of the trunk. Other than the non-rack-based Potter trunks for the '33-'34, the last U.S. Ford-released trunk for use on a rack was in the 1932 model year. As the rack portion itself was carried over for the '33 and early '34 models, the '32 trunk fit those racks as well.

That makes sense David. Thanks for clearing that up. I had always thought a piece of trim was missing
