Ford brake questions!
When was the end of the mechanical brake rod system? 1935 or 1936?, I know mechanical brakes rods were apply since 1928 in ford cars with wire wheels but in 1936 with the launch of the wide wheels ford did use brake rods to? Only I know in 1937 to 1938 they use cable system with wide wheels pattern and 1939 was the first year for hydraulic brakes, this system used the same hubs and drums from 1936 to 1938 the wide wheel pattern...

Re: Ford brake questions!
In 1937 Ford went to cables instead of rods.

Re: Ford brake questions!
The LAST year for brake RODS was 1936. You are correct in that Ford went to CABLES in '37 and '38. You are also correct in that Ford introduced the "wide-five" wheel in 1936. WIDE-FIVE wheels were used 1936-1939. 1936 HUBS and spindles were ONE-YEAR-ONLY items. The bearing snout on the '36 hub, as well as the corresponding length on the '36 spindle were unique, as the dimension was slightly longer. DD

These changes are just the ones made from the 1934 to the 1935-6 Ford: 1. The width of the brake lining was increased from 1 ½” to 1 ¾” width. The drums were of the same diameter as before, though the linings were shorter in length. The result is the same braking surface area as 1934. 1935’s wider shoes are supported on the backing plates by their semi-circular ends bearing up against the wedge pins. 2. The new drums for 1935 have a larger number of cooling fins. 3. Wedges of the type formerly used only on the front brakes are adopted to both front and rear for 1935. These wedges are designed to give a ‘self centreing’ action by being of the ‘floating type’. Both shoes self-energise as the wedge bolt no longer works like an anchor. By using these wedges for both front and rear, the speed of brake application is equal. The advantage is that it’s no longer necessary to back off the rear brakes after the adjustment is made. 4. The brake adjusting shafts are slotted with the upper ends of the shoes being a sliding fit in these shafts. Previously, the shoes were pinned to these shafts. There are two books covering how to adjust mechanical brakes on Ford V8s in 11 easy steps, sourced from original material. Check them out on Amazon's Kindle. |

Re: Ford brake questions!
The 36 drum is a hard animal to find as it was unique to that year .Ford 28 to 34 essentially share the same design .Om these models when energiser brakes are fitted both ends of the backing plate /shoes need to have the parts fitted .35 to 36 have one end self energising and only require one end modifying .
