Default Can we talk Speedometer Cables for a moment?

I am just sorting through my cables.

I have 4 originals it seems by my best guess.

Three are 1/2" diameter which are not right for my 31. I have one 1/4" diameter cable housing that measures the 61" you would expect.

I am putting them through some evaporust and two are cleaning up usable. Some surface rust and test cable seems to turn without binding in them without lubricant (by hand of course).

If I read the standards right they are supposed to be the black oxide. I am planning going with some satin paint and call it a day. What should be black, the whole length or should it only be the casing and not the ends?

Any experiences to using a repro inner cable from the parts suppliers? Does the 31 style dual square end work in the original casing?

Just curious the 1/2" cable that is complete with the keyed end inner cable. I see it is marked Stewart Warner with W-3 34200 is this a Ford cable or after market?

Thanks,

Kevin
